Your way off by claiming the 257r will do near 4000 fps with a 75 gr! Hornady #9 shows a maximum of 3500fps!
Overall the 257r is too big for varmints and too small for deer. Best for nothing. That's why it's dead!
However it's a rifle cartridge and some like it so that's nice!
How can the 257 Roberts get "upwards of 4000 fps" from a 75 gr bullet when Hornady's #9 manual shows a maximum velocity of 3500 fps?
I would have to pass up too many shots with the 257 Roberts. It just does not have the power of regular cartridges for killing power, penetration, wind drift or...
While the .257 Roberts has been a topic with us rifle aficionados for decades it never really caught on and is pretty much obsolete. You won't find ammo easily for it in stores.
None of the 57mm cartridges have been all that popular because they don't fit the actions made today. The Kimber...
laylandad,
Consider a better designed action if your spending the time and money for one to be assembled from selected components.
The 700 is an entry level cheap design.
Consider a CRF M70, Commercial Mauser etc.
The mono bullets are the poorest killers of deer.
Bullets that fragment yet of course penetrate are more humane as the kill faster.
However if you must use solid bullets then it seems you have no choice.
The ideal rifle depends on what we like in a rifle and where we hunt.
Even then there are many good guns and to each his own.
I started out in the 50's with a 722/222 which was a very poor rifle.
It was weak, heavy and clumsy. It's gone!
Next was a P17 Enfield 30-06 sporterized. Excellent...
The price is way too high now. Of course if you just have to own then thats the fun of guns.
Keep in mind that the fancy figure on the other side of the stock is not up to that on the side we look at most.
I had a new M70 SS/Syn Classic in 7mm WSM as I like the round. While it shot well at...
You could push the cleaning rod through the case and screw a brush into it that will stick inside of the case.
Don't you hate handloading those belted cases?
My first 7mm WSM was a SS M70 that showed erratic accuracy. It also had an out of round chamber. That really bothered me so I sold it.
When the Kimber Montanas came out in the WSM's I got one in 270 WSM as I knew the 7 WSM would not make it. Never the less I still had to have a 7 WSM so I...
I have loaded for and hunted deer and black bear with the .358 Winchester since 1966. I have four rifles so chambered.
I loaded the 200 gr Silvertip for decades with IMR 3031 until they stopped selling it as a component. I switched to the 180 Speer and loaded it with 4198 and other powders...
I have experianced pressure spikes using MagPro in hot weather. Loads that were ok in cool weather were hot when it was hot out.
I don't load MagPro anymore.
My current load for the 7mm WSM in my M70 is the 168 gr VLD, R 22 and Fed 215's.
Previously loading 140 Bt's with 7828 and 215's.
264 Win Man,
Thanks for the compliment. The rifle is my 40X chambered for the 6mm Rem. International cartridge. I am an old retired target shooter who used that rifle for the 200 yd position matches in CT.
The rifle started out with the factory marksman stock but I obtained the thumbhole...
Take the rifle and scope to a gunsmith or two. Most of them have the old type bases that your looking for. Lyman made those bases as well.
Under recoil, even centerfire, those scopes move forward away from the eye.
I have used a 15X Unertl Ultra Varmint on a 243 for decades and other Lyman...
nitis,
I am not a fan of Reminton rifles for hunting although I used them for target shooting. I glanced at the Rem. site for that XHR seems like another marketing effort rather than redesign which is what Rem really needs for a hunting gun. It has a triangular barrel! LOL.
My suggestion...
