    ER SHaw Barrels

There goes the neighborhood. Just kidding, Tico, welcome to the forum. I have heard good things about McGowen for reasonably priced quality barrels.

Ten Top Deer Rifles of All Time?

For the would be seller, at least. I've seen .243's and .308's for very reasonable prices lately, mostly post 64's though.

Ten Top Deer Rifles of All Time?

I typically see several 88's on the local used racks throughout a year. I was just surprised no one's list included one. Scotty, after you get yourself a 71, you should try to get your hands on one of these: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=265153258

    BlueBook value ?

The .257 Roberts is a fairly sought after chambering at the moment. I would agree with Dubyam that $550 is about the top as you can get a new Hawkeye around the $600 mark. I would put the bottom end a little higher though (~$500) due to the desirability of the Roberts.

Ten Top Deer Rifles of All Time?

Sorry, I didn't read the OP as being based on general popularity or sales numbers. I haven't come across all that many Jarrett Beanfield rifles or Tar-Hunt slug guns.

Ten Top Deer Rifles of All Time?

All this love for the for the 99 and not a single mention of an 88 or Finnwolf? I'm a sucker for bolt guns, but I have to admit that these lever guns bring a lot of utility to the table for a deer hunter.

You're telling me... Scotty, sounds like as good an excuse as any to get after another deer.

    Dinner after the kill

I came up with a tenderloin recipe this season that is quick, easy and has quickly become a favorite in my house. I lay the tenderloin flat and make two rows of staggered slits approximately an inch long and an inch and a half apart. I then weave pieces of bacon through the slits. A little bit...

    M70 Featherweight 300WSM

I believe Scotty is trying to keep the termites away from that nice piece of wood. Very nice, Scotty. That is a fine looking rifle with some good looking walnut.

    Pronghorn Antelope

I believe that you'll find calling them "goats" is no more inaccurate than calling them "antelope". Their nearest relatives through biological classification go the whole way back to class. That means they have their family, genus, and (obviously) species all to themselves. They're just as much...

Thanks, guys. CC, that .358 BLR is a great rifle. Sounds likes its a real hammer on deer as well. There's a Whelen in my future someday as my 35 cal., the .358 Win definitely has a lot of appeal, though. I think I'll have a long happy relationship with the .280. The only thing the .270 has on...

Thanks, guys. Congrats again to you and your son, Scotty. We often drive deer in rifle season and they occasionally get moving pretty good, which makes the shooting tricky. I imagine that they're pretty much flat out with dogs behind them. Dubyam, I'm in south central PA.

I broke in the .280 yesterday afternoon. It performed as expected... mushy lungs compliments of a 154 SST.

I bet this will never happen again.

Thanks again, guys. The load is 57 gr. IMR 4350, a 165 SST (sorry Nosler), a CCI 200, and Win brass. The rifle is my XTR Sporter... I'm sure everyone already knew that group had to come from a Winchester.

I bet this will never happen again.

Thanks guys. The 15x scope does aid in placing the crosshairs exactly where you want them. Knowing this rifle pretty well though, I think we'll have to chalk this one up to "the bullets had to go somewhere".

    270 Winchester and rl25

I use RL22 with CCI primers in my 270. I can't complain about the accuracy or velocity.
