My choice for 3 would be
300 H&H Mag in a sporter barreled rifle
.25-06 bolt action
.22-250 bolt action
To be honest I could do away with the .22-250 and survive on the 2 rifles above. I did that for a good many years.
But, there may come a time when hunting habits and terrain change. If...
That's a large column of powder, as Dr Mike told you, it needs a mag primer to get a good burn going.
I've seen load manuals that don't recommend mag primers with some large loads in 7mm Rem Mag but I think that's nuts.
I don't feel out of place with a standard primer at 55 grs but over 65 gr...
I've been looking to try the IMR8208 myself. I'm not quite satisfied with Varget accuracy so have been looking for something else. Another that I want to try is IMR 4007ssc.
Have heard others did well with 4320 but not sure if I want to try that one.
I don't know that the new Winchesters will or won't sell, but you can't buy them if none of the shops have them in stock. All my rifles are either Remington 700 or Winchester 70's, and I prefer the Winchester. Had I known the Light had a B&C stock I probably would have bought that.
Wonder...
I guanantee the B&C will shrink your groups. I bought my SPS in Oct, the best I could do was 1" groups with most over that.
I immediately sprung for a B&C Medalist and Timney trigger. The rifle is now shooting about 1/2" and should do a little better as I find what it likes.
A tip on...
I'd like to see one of the Coyote Lights. No one around here stocks Winchester rifles saying they're too expensive and don't sell. I might have considered the light had I known the stock was by B&C. All I could think of was some cheap tupperware like the Remington SPS.
I've owned 3 B&C stocks, never spent more then 5 minutes installing any of them. Fit and finish have been excellent in my opinion. I would purchase another in a heartbeat.
I take it these aren't made anymore as I don't see them on the Winchester web site. Seems like the new one has a synthetic stock.
Should have taken a look at the Coyote Light but I sure do like the way my Stealth shoots, most accurate rifle I ever bought in stock form.
I'm curious about the Coyote. Does it have a heavy barrel?
The best Winchester I ever owned was Stealth that I bought when I heard they were closing the plant. Gorgeous rifle and shoots better then anything else I have but it is heavy. I recently wanted to buy another in .22-250 but...
Throw that SPS stock in the garbage where it belongs and get something else. I've owned rifles for over 30 years and that is without a doubt the worst stock I've ever seen.
The problem is it's flimsy. Even bedded when you fire it the action will still flex in the stock.
I bought one back...
I have to ask what is meant by "these are regular bullets not bt"? The reason I'm asking is I'm also on a few other forums. One of the people on the forum is from Australia. He tells me they can still buy Nosler .257 100 gr solid base bullets there. Said they are quite popular with...
For me it was the .25-06 Remington and my first centerfire rifle. Didn't even have a press, used a Lee Loader and friends' scale. That little tool built a lot of ammo.
And 34 years later I still have that tool and my original rifle. It now has a new barrel and I no longer use the Lee...
The .25-06 is my favorite cartridge, it is truely a dual purpose cartridge. For varmint hunting I like the 85 to 87 gr bullets. This is one spectacular varmint cartridge at almost any distance that you can see a small target. The trajectory of this cartridge is very flat.
For all around...
I've been at it for 34 years now. Started out with a Lee Loader for .25-06 if any of you know what a Lee Loader is. From there I graduated to an RCBS Rock Chucker. Then I started doing .357 and 9mm. That was it for 24 years.
Eventually I started shooting pretty heavy while living in FL...
+1
I used JB alot on my Remington 700 VS when I bought it 34 years ago. I have no doubt that I hurried the wear using JB.
Since then I purchased a different cleaner called Sweets which seems to be popular with high power shooters. Very strong ammonia smell to it but I use this everytime...
That's how I started out with 3" groups seating out to the lands. Drove me nuts for a month as I couldn't figure out what was going on. May work for you, it didn't for me.
Once I went back to max length the gun started to shoot. Now I'm loading under max length and the gun shoots fine...
I've never seen any loads for RL 17 in the .25-06. Can't believe the velocity you're getting either. What make is the rifle? I've been shooting a Rem 700 VS in .25-06 for 34 years. Replaced the barrel 3 years ago with a Krieger match.
So far in my rifle RL 19 has given me the best...
I can certainly understand about the interesting reloading technics. I couldn't believe the last one I just tried to get through someones head last week. They had 3 old containers of very old powder that had changed colors from rust inside the can. Try as I may I could not make that...
I tried the Vmax 55 gr and they were OK but not great. I was using them with H380 but I learned one thing about H380, if you intend to shoot all year in OH stay away from ball powders. Every month the POI would change with the temp. In Dec bullets were hitting 3" lower then July. That's...
