I picked up a box of 155 SMK Palma bullets and a box of lapua brass to work up a load for my tube gun. I have a good load for my LR308 using CFE223 and 175 SMK. I have a couple hundred 168gr SMK and Custom Comp's and a pretty good selection a powders. I have an 8 pounder of IMR 4895 so that's where I'm going to start. Varget, h414 are others I have to work with.

Anyone have any tried and true loads for the 308?

Specifically 155gr SMK with IMR 4895?

Thanks

May have already sent this your way, but this is the single best article on handloading the .308 Win that I know of. Very much target / long-range oriented info:

I shot a mess of 155 gr Noslers and Sierras downrange with the .308 loaded with Varget. Excellent accuracy. Most of my shooting was at 600 yards, prone. Either in matches, or practicing for matches.

Hodgdon's data tops out at 47 grains for 2900+ fps. I was getting over 3,000 fps with 46.5 grains of Varget using a 30" barrel, and 2850 fps with the 24" barrel. No pressure problems with the Varget. Excellent accuracy, most of my hits were in the ten ring in matches, with a pretty fair X-count as well.

I'd work up to that 46.5-47 grain level though. A lot can depend on your rifle, the brass you use, the primers, etc...

I have always gotten great accuracy with 150 to 155 gr bullets with 43 to 44 grs IMR 4895 in the 308 Win.

Best load for the 175gn SMKs was with 45gn of W-748, 24" barrel. This load made a four inch group at 600 yards, shot from a bipod. The group drifted seven inches to the right.

Try 45.6 grains of IMR 4895 and 155's... that's in Winchester brass.

If you're using Nosler brass (which appears to be weight sorted Norma), then use 45.2 grains.

Let us know how it does. :)

I just loaded up 20 at 45.0gr IMR 4895 and 155 SMK PALMA in lapua brass. Hope they show promise

I have an awesome load with the 155. But mine are with the a max. 45 grains of h4895 seated at 2.800. This is giving me a velocity of 2964 fps. I get bug hole groups at 200 yards out of my savage 10t with this load. I have also shot this load out to 1762 yards (ranged with a Swarovski range finder. I hit the target 3 out of 10 times. Great load and not hot in my rifle.
