44 mag

Tons of good powders, just depends on what you want to do. Also, do you mean 225gr FTX? I believe Hornady only makes XTP's in .44 cal in 180, 200, 240 & 300 gr. I love the 240gr XTP's, they work well to plink as well for deer hunting. If you're looking for max velocity H110/W296 and Lil'Gun. My favorite is 2400 for hunting loads, Unique for mid range and for lighter loads Titegroup. Best performance with H110/W296 is with mag primers.

My .44 Mag is a Super Blackhawk Hunter. Great guns!

I started with a 7.5" Super Blackhawk at least 40 years ago and have gone through several good 44's - always searching for one I liked better. I think I hit on that about 15 years or so ago with the 5" S&W 629, then just last year I added another Ruger...

I load two types of ammo - full on full power fire breathers at max or near max charges of H110 / Win 296 (sometimes something else). These are for hunting or whenever I want all that danged power. Could be a 240/250 grain bullet or I might pop up to the 300 grain range. They all kick like the dickens and roar.

And much milder loads with Titegroup or Unique or something similar. Back that 240/250 grain bullet down to about 1,000 fps and the revolver is a lot more pleasant to shoot but still more powerful than a 45 ACP. A worthwhile load. I shoot this level of load most often.

Enjoy!

I picked up a 44 revolver last year with a 4” barrel. H110 is an attention grabber in it for sure. A powder I found that burn clean and not as abusive is HS-6.

21 grs. / 2400 behind 240 gr. Keith SWC (429421) was Elmer’s load. I usually backed it off to 19.0 to tame the abuse. Same bullet with 9.0 or 12.0 grs. of Unique worked well too.

IIRC, Elmer's load was 22.0 gr. of H2400. I'm not sure if he dropped a grain when it became A2400 but 22.0 gr. either 2400 and the 240 gr. Keith bullet always worked well in any of my .44 magnums. What is little known about Keith is he had three loads for the .44 mag. There was is famous (?) 22.0/2400 we always heard about but he laso had rwo lighter loads using his 240 gr. SWC bullet. One was with Bullseye for plinking and shooting at paper. The other one used Unique as a general purpose load. The two lighter loads were loaded to shoot as close to the point of impact of his top 2400 load as possible so that he could use the same sight picture when shooting whichever load. I never did learn which loading was his standard for every day carry.

I like the light plinking load, 10.0 grs Unique for the 240 gr SWC hard cast lead. And hitting my 58 yard gong is easy.

I have lots of experience loading the 44 mag in revolver...

Winchester 296 is king for me!

That said...240 gr work better than 225 and 300 gr are the best.

That was my experience in 4 different platforms... but your gun might be different but for me 300, nosler or hornady shot the best

good luck and enjoy!

I've never owned a revolver until Saturday. I was at a auction and there was a ruger super blackhawk with a 7 1/2 barrel. Looks like it have been test fired only. Bought for $400. What is a good powder to use with a 225gn hornady xtp.
Vihtavouri N110 is a good powder coworker uses it for his loads.

I mostly shoot 240 grain and heavier but almost always use 2400 for hunting loads. Even though I wear hearing protection, it seems to have less muzzle blast than H110/W296. I also use it in .357 mag hunting loads for the same reason.
