Hey guys! New to the board.
I have a 7 Rem Mag and I’m shooting 160 grain Partition bullets. I’ve been loading 4831 and ran out, but I have a pound of RL22 I’m itching to try. Anyone running something similar?
Thanks I’m advance!

Welcome to the forum, lots of knowledgeable folks on here to help when asked.
I used the 24 inch barrel in Quickload, and RL-22 is a great powder, I use it for my 300 Win Mag with good velocities, but its also temperature sensitive.

Thank you tack driver!!! Man, I had a guy tell me to start with 66 grains and work towards 68. That doesn’t look too safe according to this. Glad I asked!!!!

Thank you all so much! I love to reload and shoot, just a little squeamish about blowing one up!!!

Welcome aboard. Always glad to see people wanting to increase their knowledge about shooting. You've come to the right place. A great group of knowledgeable shooters and hand loaders post here. You won't find a friendlier group willing to share their knowledge. You've had some good advice already, so there is little need for me to try to add to what has already been posted. Again, welcome aboard.

Don't have the notes but I could get them if needed, but a 7mm using 160 partitions if memory serves me, came alive on both speed and accuracy using RL22.

Before that I was unimpressed on both fronts. On that particular rifle RL22 worked fantastic.

This is so exciting!!! I’ve loaded a lot over the years, but never really tweaked around and got it like I want. I shoot a custom smokeless .45 muzzleloader that I’ve delved into Satterlee etc with and it is insanely accurate. Now to focus on the center fire. I appreciate you all for the help!!!!

Welcome to the forum!
63.0 grs RL22 and a 160 gr AB has been an excellent load in the 7mm Rem Mag. About 3050 fps and sub MOA.
Be sure to work up.

Agreed on this above. My rife like 62.2g of RL22 w/ 160g Partitions and Accubonds. Right at 3000 ft/s depending on the temp. My node goes to 62.5g.

Y’all don’t laugh at me... a node is identified when say, 62.5, 62.6, 62.7 all are super close in velocity? I’m just a red neck farmer from Arkansas hahahaha

Welcome.
I don't shoot a 7RM, but you have received good information. Looking forward to your continued participation.

Welcome to the forum. This is by far the friendliest forum with a lot of experienced people always willing to help

No, we aren't going to laugh at anyone, I have been in your neck of the woods back in the beginning of my reloading days, sometimes I could not hit the broadside of a barn, I learned from reading forums, lots of reading, and experience on the bench figuring out variables. Other than that, I learned from some fine folks here.
Hope this little video helps on explaining about nodes.
As to your question, yes, its like looking on a graph or paper where the velocities keeps going up until it flats out within a few charge weights and continues to go up after, the flat spot is a node.

A few things for thought, every rifle is different, bullets are different, powder lots are different, primers are different and cartridge case capacities can be a lot different too.I load 66.0grs of Reloader 22 in my three 7mags with 160gr Accubonds.I use Remington cases,WLRM primers,I'm off the lands .030 or more. All my rifles group this load very well,.75" or less.Partition bullets I've loaded seem to run a little higher pressure.I've always seemed to have better accuracy with those bullets loaded with about a grain or so less powder.I use a lot of Winchester brass from most of my other cartridges I load for,but for the 7mag,I started with Remington brass almost 30yrs ago and stayed with it for years.I was working with a 308 Norma Mag a while back.I used some 7mag Winchester and Remington cases that I necked up.Winchester brass for the most part is known to have a little higher case capacity.I noticed I could fill the case to the top of the case with about 1.5grs more of the extruded powder I was using in the Remington case than I could in the Winchester case.I haven't gone back and checked the difference using ball powder which will give me a better idea to see just how much more the case capacity difference is.I did this test with 30-06 brass using Hunter ball powder.I used a Winchester,Lapua and a Remington case.I know most comparisons are done with water, but ball powder will give you a good idea how much difference the case capacity is.It certainly shows it's not a good idea to treat all cartridge cases the same. The difference in my 30-06 cases was Winchester case held about two more grains of powder than the Remington case. The cases I used were Remington 30-06,case weight was 200grs,Lapua 30-06,case weight was 194.8grs and Winchester 30-06,case weight 190.1grs.I filled the Remington case full of powder and that weighed 67.5grs.I then dumped the 67.5grs into the Lapua case(150 on the case) and then into the Winchester case(168 on the case). You could see the Lapua and the Winchester case would hold more powder than the 67.5gr charge that filled the Remington case full. The full case was the Remington case. The caLapua 30-06 brass 67.5grs Hunter.jpgWinchester 30-06 case 67.5grs Hunter.jpg30-06 Rem brass 67.5grs Hunter.jpg

That’s an awesome video!!!

Just checked the case volumes of some cases.Cases are Winchester 7mag necked to 30cal,Remington 7mag necked to 30cal and a 308 Norma Mag case all trimmed to 2.494.Winchester case weighed 238.0grs,Remington case weighed 233.5grs and Norma case weighed 226.9grsThe Winchester case was the heaviest at 238.0grs and had the least amount of volume.I put 88.1grs of Hunter to fill the case. The Remington case was a little lighter, weighing 233.5grs and held all the 88.1grs with room to spare. The Norma brass was the lightest of the three weighing 226.9grs and was able to hold the 88.1grs of Hunter with the most room for more powder to fill the case full.Once again showing just how different cases can be.Norma brass 88.1grs of Hunter.jpgRemington brass 88.1grs Hunter.jpgWinchester brass 88.1grs Hunter.jpg

An excellent graphic of what hand loaders deal with almost unconsciously after a time. It does point out the need to be cautious in using the same cases when working up a load.

I’m going through all my brass and picking out just Hornady for this experiment. I have several Winchester and a few Remington. I found my notes from last year.... I tried 65.5 gr (hot) and it shot like crap. Zero pressure signs. I loaded 3 at 65.8, 3 at 66, 3 at 66.2, 3 at 66.3 and 3 at 66.4. Thought that’s would give me a good idea if I’m hitting a node in that range. From what I’m seeing and hearing, RL22 does best when pushed a tad?
