7x57 Loads

Mike, if you would be so inclined could you please show me some 175 and 160 data for the little rifle. I appreciate it a ton. Alliant showed almost 2600 with a 175 using RL22. I kinda think a 160 at around 2600 should be possible. It would make a sweet rifle with 160 PTs. I'm pretty jealous of my boy, that rifle looks like so much fun to handle!

He wouldn't even trade me for the Whelen, do you believe that? Dang boy won't hardly have anything to do with a rifle that doesn't have Winchester stamped on it.

Scotty is creating a monster!

You can do better than that! Just get some 160 Partitions with 48.0 grains of IMR 7828 ssc and run that 7x57 Mauser out to 2500 fps. Now you are in elk country for many people now.

I know how much you like Alliant powders, here are a few loads using RL19 and RL22.

Cartridge : 7 x 57 mm Mauser (SAAMI)
Bullet : .284, 160, Nosler PART SP 16327
Useable Case Capaci: 52.354 grain H2O = 3.399 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.071 inch = 78.00 mm
Barrel Length : 22.0 inch = 558.8 mm
Powder : Alliant Reloder-19

Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 2.0% of nominal charge.
CAUTION: Figures exceed maximum and minimum recommended loads !

WOW- Thank you very much Mike! That is awesome stuff.

What about RL17, worth trying with the 175's? I loaded up some of the 145's yesterday with the data you sent before?

Either way, I think I will load up some 160's today and see what it does with RL19/22. It actually looks pretty impressive once you look a little further than the 50K PSI range. I would have to assume the 7x57 is plenty strong to handle the loads in the 60K PSI range? Again, I will be coming at them from well below, but I wanna verify before I start moving out with it!

Very awesome Mike! I just copy/pasted it all out to add into my data folder you have built up so much for me! That really looks pretty awesome. Headed to the loading bench.. So many combos... This is going to be a long range day!

When I was loading for my own Model 70 Featherweight (chambered in 7X57), I focused on 140 and 150 grain bullets. However, those 160s look pretty good, and the last workup I performed for a client provided some pretty exciting results with 160 grain PT. Within reason, it will take down any game in this province.

I just loaded up some RL17 loads with the 160 PT with the data you sent Mike. Looks pretty good to me as well. I would think a 160 PT at around 2600-2700 would be just about as nice a hunting round as you would want. Plus, it is very light on the shoulder and that would count for alot to my son.

I've loaded for the 7x57 alot since 1976. The most accurate load I have found is a stiff load of H414 (W760) and a good 140 grain bullet (BTs are excellent). However, I don't like the carbon fouling associated with H414 (I use magnum primers for all ball powders, this included), and have since moved to H4350 or IMR 4350.

With 160 grain bullets, I like H4831.

Thanks GF1. W760 or IMR4350 will be the next powder I try if RL17 doesn't work out. Going to try and hit the range today with the rifle and see what it does.

I worked up a stiff load with W760 and the 140 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip. A very accurate combo. I get groups in the .50" to .75" for the most part with the load when I do my part. Probably the most accurate load in my M70 Featherweight 7x57 is the 170 gr. Sierra round nose at roughly 2400 FPS (estimated). Groups run from .375" to .50", again when I do my part. Powder was W760. Brass Remington. I've been using Winchester WLR (standard) primers with my ball powder loads and haven't had any carbon fouling problems.
SBJ358. I can very well understand why your son won't part with his M70 Featherweight. The only way you's get mine would be at gunpoint and I'd still make a fight of it. I like it that much.
I have a very nice, if not real fancy FN mauser custom in 7x57 and I like the Featherweight just a little bit better because it's not quite as heavy. Both are equally accurate though.

You guys are killing me with this subject! Here is my 7x57 it's a Ruger 77RSI in stainless. I've only fired one round out of it - to get a fired case for measurements. I've got 140gr BT's over H414,IMR4350 and Hunter all ready to go and now I want to load 160 and 175 Partitions. The 140gr BT's are loaded to an OAL of 3.185(long throat on this one). Come on sunshine!

I do love the Mannlicher stocks. I had a CZ full stock chambered in 30-06. It was a handy little rifle that was simply fun to carry and to shoot.

Very nice rifle Scott! That is certainly a good looking rifle.

Paul, than you for the heads up on the 7x57. It is turning out to be a very accurate little rifle with some solid ability...

160 PT's at 2700 using RL17... Still a little room to grow as well. That is a solid combo for anything short of grizzlies in my book..

Scotty,
Nice group for a classic combo!

I think it'll do better. Kind of a crappy range day, but this little 7 is surprising me everytime I hit the range Scott. That Ruger of yours looks SWEET buddy. Can't wait to hear/see what it does!
