So there has been an add in the paper for a few months now for a 98 Mauser, sporterized with a sling and a peep for a steal of a price. I am thinking of maybe buying it to ream to 8mm-06 or 8mm-338 and building my first real wildcat out of the deal. Or just keep it as it is for a another fun gun.

I have had a little experience with the 8mm-06 and its a good load though wont do anything my 30-06 wont do and just as good, unless we get into 250 grain bullets of course.

But I read about the 8mm-338 Mag in the Speer Number 9 manual and am interested but does anyone know anything about these? Any experience or what not?

No experience with it, but QL suggests it would be a thumper. Here's some data with a 200 grain PT.

Cartridge : 8 mm -338
Bullet : .323, 200, Nosler PART SP 35277
Useable Case Capaci: 76.720 grain H2O = 4.981 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.340 inch = 84.84 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch = 609.6 mm
Powder : Hodgdon H4831 SC

Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 2.0% of nominal charge.
