Another Savage question?

I'm calling tomorrow to get prices on two savage rifles and one of the guys I hunt with wants me to get a price on an Axis camo in 7MM-08, it's going to be a Christmas present for his son if the price is right.

Does anyone know what the action is like on that model? I know it doesn't have the accutrigger but he can always have a trigger job done on it down the road.

The Axis action isn't that bad considering that it's miles ahead of Remington's budget offering 710/770. With that, I feel Ruger has trumped them all with their new American rifle. It doesn't come with a camo stock, but the two I worked with over the weekend were sure shooting some impressive groups with Federal Fusion ammo. Just a thought.

I think with a trigger job it will be a good first rifle for a 13 year old.

IMO the 7MM-08 is a underrated round.

The 7mm-08 is a superb round in its own right. For a youth, or someone who is slight of build or recoil shy, this can be a great cartridge. It works well on game, is relatively easy to load and doesn't kick you out from under your hat. There are a lot of guys that imagine they need a massive cannon to prove their prowess who would benefit from shooting a 7mm-08.

+1 on the trigger job. Action is a decent action, but the triggers are horrendous. After a trigger job it should be just right.

I have a publication the Alaska Dept of Fish and Game put out called hunt Alaska and it more or less states what you wrote when it comes to choosing a rifle caliber to hunt in Alaska.

Another good option is the Marlin XS7.

I thinthe Marlin XS/XS-7's and the Weatherby Vanguard S-2 rifles are the best value for the dollar rifles available at this time.

The TC Venture with $50 rebate is another great deal right now and they come with a MOA guarantee. The .270 I owned for awhile sure shot nice. It just lacked soul, I'm at a loss for better words for me to keep it.

He thought it over after getting a couple prices and decided to get a model 11 with the accutrigger and accustock.
