Article on 300Win mag

Great article Mike, I especially like the part where you said " I like to think of the .300 Winchester Magnum as the modern .30-06 of today." That was pretty cool! Scotty

Thanks guys, it was cool to do, allowing me to remember that hunt and especially since I did not get to go on a hunt this year. :)

Yes, I believe that you have used that phrase to identify the 300Win mag on quite a few occasions.

Great article Mike. It is a true all around rifle for sure. I wished I shot mine more. Need to get out more with the rifles this year and get them all tuned up. Scotty

As usual, Mike, the photography accompanying the article is stunning. It makes the reader understand the countryside, and it brings the rifle and cartridge to life.

Thanks Mike, means a lot to me for people get something out of it and causes them to have dreams to plan hunts.

Nicely done!! Nice pictures and very nice right up. As you know I am a big 300 Win Mag fan and you stated the attributes of the cartridge well. Thanks for sharing!!!

It was my pleasure and joy to express the thoughts about my experiences with the 300Win mag.

What does MRP mean on your first 2 loads?

MRP is a powder made by Norma. MRP and MRP-2 are powders used by Weatherby in their ammo that gives great velocities.

There is some speculation, and some folks who firmly believe, that MRP is really Reloader 22 by another name.

Care to speculate?

According to Hartmut Broemel, author of QuickLOAD and perhaps Europe's premier ballistician, these are the same powder, packaged by the respective companies.

MRP is not RL-22 and RL-22 is not MRP. RL-22 varies in lots and has had those problems which I have experienced from lot to lot difference when working up load for a major reload work with my 300Wby. I never over 30yrs of using MRP ever experience a lot variation in pressures or velocities like I have with RL-22. Norma has strict standards, no lot of powder is accepted by Norma unless it meets their standards. Now on top of that, they do not have the same burn rate. Also quick load with prove that they are not the same powder when both are used for any cartridge, Quick load does not have them using the same charge. Also, RL-22 never beat MRP for velocities in my 300Wby. Now on top of all of that MRP has been around for about 40 years. I contacted Norma by email two years ago over this same problem and they said it is not the same. So, I thought I would speculate for you

If you are using any of the H- powders, like 1000 or 4350, 4831 I would really appreciate some load data with the 180 gr. and or the 200 gr AB, bullet. I hopefully will have the kinks worked of my 50 year old 721 sometime in the near future and will begain load development. Any info would be helpful!!!

Are you asking for the 300Win Mag or the 300Wby. I am out of town but as soon as I get back home and to my notes I will give you the data from my notes. Let me know which cartridge you are asking for and I should be able to send the info Friday.

Mike, I think Bill is asking for WBY data, as he is getting his old one tuned back up. I would appreciate any data you have also as I have a 300WBY I have not fired yet! Scotty
