Up until three years ago, wife Storm had not shot any firearms. She quickly took to 9mm pistols and a rifle in .243Win. She harvested a small deer with her .243Win., but I wanted something better for our planned trip to Wyoming this year for mule deer and antelope. I researched and found that the Howa rifle was highly touted and chose the 7mm-08 chambering. Not being totally unselfish, I bought the rig with two stocks. One the standard length and the second the Youth Stock. From the first round fired at the range, Storm loved the rifle. I topped it off with a 3-9x40 Burris scope and put on a padded leather sling. Over the past year, Storm put over 200 of my handloads through the rifle. I had begun with the Nosler 140gr. Bal. Tip, but read about and liked the 120gr. BT, so I switched, working her load up to 3028fps MV.
Storm was shooting clovers at 100 yds., 3" groups at 200 yards and 7" groups at 300 yards. I deemed her annointed and ready, after getting her to fire from all of the popular shooting positions.
Both her animals were one shot kills to the lungs. The 5x5 buck was at 180 yards and the antelope was at 140 yards. I was very proud of Storm and very satified by the performance of the Nosler 120gr BT 7mm bullet. We will both use that bullet from now on, as I shoot a 280Rem. rifle.
If there are any questions regarding the Howa rifle or the cartridge, I will endeavor to answer. \
Best,

Many women tend to be better shooters than men--they pay attention to instruction. It sounds as if Storm heeded her instruction and it has paid off big time.

I bought the same youth stock from Howa (i.e. short Hogue from Legacy Sports) and installed it on my 243 Vanguard for my daughters. I bedded the recoil lug (yes, even in the plastic) and it shoots just as well as it did in the pretty wood stock. Last week they were shooting pumpkins and steel at 200 yards so I was quite pleased with it.

You are very correct that it's a great rifle!

Now if I could only get that to cross over into other area's :p
Just joking ladies!

In all seriousness,,,,, I think alot of that is when doing something new, women tend not to overthink things. And do pay closer attention, I agree. And I also agree, they usually shoot extremely well.

In terms of females shooting: Three years ago my son in law, Col. Dale Johnson, restarted the rifle team competition at the high school where he heads up the JROTC program. His best shooters have been female students, none of whom had fired anything before beginning the program. A few have won medals in comp.
It seems that when starting with raw material, females do better, up to a point.
