The next time your in the market for an all round hunting scope. Take a look at the Schmidt and Bender Summit. I don't think you will be disappointed. The options are limited and a lot of you prefer more power than that one provides, but they are pretty nice little scopes. I don't like the big scopes, especially the 50 and over bell's. so this works for me. Anyone else here who likes the Summit and dislikes 50 and over on a rifle

Best Regards

Jamila

Jamila,

The S&B Summit looks to be a good scope. Like you, I do not like the 50mm objectives.

I don't like the larger objectives and 40 or 42 seems plenty big enough. The most power I have in a scope on any of my rifles is a 4.5-14x40mm Leupold and that is plenty. That's also the only variable that I have on my personal rifles. I have a two 6x Leupolds, one a 36mm and one a 42mm, and one 4x fixed Leupold. I've never felt handicapped with the fixed power. I like your thinking Jamila.

I certainly prefer smaller objectives. I do own a couple of scopes with 50mm objectives, but they were almost accidental acquisitions. S&B are definitely top line optics, among the finest anyone can own.

I owned the Summit for a while. It has the typical S&B stellar optics, and an almost unusable thin wire duplex reticle, at least for my 50+ yr old eyes. I got rid of it pronto.

Jamila I have never owned a S&B but have looked through a few and know that they are top quality! I just purchased my first scope with a 50mm objective, I do not like how they look on my rifles so I am placing it on my Son's model 70 .

Blessings,
Dan

I just bought a VX-6 2-12x42mm for Sue's M48 280AI. Just waiting on the rings to arrive so I can mount the scope and get it zeroed for 200 yds. I'll order the custom CDS dial and she will be all set for crop damage deer and hopefully WY antelope this fall. She likes my VX-6 3-18x44mm but opted for the smaller and lighter 2-12.

JD, I have the exact same scope as the one your wife is placing on her 280AI and it is on my 280AI . I am sending it in for a little warranty work and I believe that I am going to get the Windplex reticle installed while it is at the Leupold US shop.

PS. I believe that the VX6 is a fine scope (y).

Blessings,
Dan

Been thinking about this since AH started the post. S&B Scopes are great Scopes but out of my price range. My idea of a perfect scope would be 2-10 X 42. Zeiss has a new Duralyt model that is a 2-8X42 that would fit my price range and I would probably spring for it since I can buy it for under $600 . But I must admit that I really like my Meopta Meopro 3.5-10X44 and it can be had for under $400. There are some great buys out there if you look around.

I have to admit that while I have never been fond of 50 mm or larger objective scopes on hunting rifles, I do own 3.

Two are the Leupold VXL's with the concave objective allowing the scope to be mounted lower over the barrel. One is the 3.5 -10 x 50 B&C, while the other is the 4.5-14 x 50 B&C, mounted on my LH Model 700 250AI and Browning B-78 270 Wby. While these are hunting rifles, they will be used for open country hunting of antelope, white tails and wolves. They will not be packed in scabbards on a tv or horseback, or for mountain hunting.

The third is the Swarovski Z3 4-12 x 50 BRH on my Sako 85 VLS 260 Rem. This rifle is meant for target shooting mostly, as it RH and heavy, although I will eventually use it to harvest some large game animal.

The remainder of the scopes on my hunting rifles range from 20mm to 42mm objective lenses.
I really prefer their:
1) smaller profiles
2) reduced weight
3) fit on rifles
4) less likelihood of getting banged or bumped
5) lower power ranges (nothing exceeding 14 power, of which there are only 2 out of 18 scopes) still retain usable exit pupils for light transmission under low light conditions ( I normally will keep down the power to maintain a 7mm exit pupil during low light hunting conditions, for longer range shots; otherwise kept on lowest power setting until needed)

It's funny how we seem to think alike and our ideas blend together. Like Blkram I consider the same things when I buy a scope. The only difference is I don't own one larger than 44mm. I found I could fit a 1" diameter 44mm scope in low Talley light weight rings. I have never owned a 30mm diameter scope because I had extra one inch rings and was too cheap to buy the 30mm and the 30mm scopes were more expensive also. As for the 30mm scopes I probably don't know what I'm missing but I like the lighter weight of the 1".

I would love to own an SB but they are way out of my league price wise. I hear they are one of the best a man could ever own though.

Jamila,

S&B has been a leader in scope technology for years, and this looks as though it will be another winner. It reminds me of the Swarovski PV 2.5-10x42 I sold to a certain individual on her you may know.......

I do have a PMII 5-15x56 DT CCW Mrad on my tactical GAP 6.5x47 Lapua that I use for completion, nice hardware, but I wish the slash marks on the turrets were easier to read like on my Kahles Tactical, and my USO. Speaking of which, my USO is a 1.8-10x37 that has glass just a clear, or maybe even better then the other dozen scopes I have. It may lack magnification power at only 10x, but is super clear that makes up for a lot!

Is this the scope you got vs. the S&B red dot you were looking to buy?
