I have been off work for a few days do to my injury(check off topic forum), and have been brainstorming over a new varmint gun. My 22-250 is freakin awesome, but I'm looking to build a big brother for it. Something that will reach out there and buck the wind well. My 22-250 is good to 500 yards, so looking for something from there out.
Here are my ideas:
6 BR
6 Dasher
30 BR
6.5x284
300WSM

I want something that is easy on recoil, reloading cost, and case life. Anyone have any experience with these calibers or other ideas? Name your perfect 500yd and beyond chuck killer!

SE,
I like my 6-284 a whole lot. Get a twist that'll handle the 105s and 107s and your in business. Necking down the brass is easy - I use a Redding type "S" die with two different bushings and the cartridge is ready to shoot. 6.5-284 brass is very availible and of good quality. My other choice would be 6.5-284; in either case I'd put them in a long action and throat them long. Both of these could be used for deer and antelope - I do. If your after a stock gun or on a budget look at the Weatherby Vanguard S2 in 240 or 257 Weatherby. They can be had for around $400 and shoot really well. Just my 2 cents.
Good luck,
Scott

Nothing for 500+ will be easy on reloading cost, case life or recoil. The 6.5X284 is probably as close as you're going to get for hitting really small targets way out. A 300 mag (pick one) or .338 Lapua is really the way to go for wayoutski.

I've always thought it would be interesting to chamber a 220 swift or 220 cheetah in a fast twist barrel and see what it would do with the heavier AR match bullets from 500 to 1000 though. Would probably cook off a lot of rifling pretty fast.

I am with Scott. Anything on the 6 or 6.5MM should nuke chucks. Since you aren't shooting tons of bullets you might see great barrel life. I would think a Savage Pred Max in 260 would be a sweet combo. It has the twist needed for long bullets and would be a snap to change barrels if and when you want.

This is just an opinion, but that is what you asked for, right?

I would skip the first three you list, not enough horse power. And I would not really like to plink at chucks all day with my 300 WSM's. (Although I really like shooting coyotes with them)

I would probably go with a .257 Weatherby Mag. Plenty of speed and energy. I have shot a number of rockchucks at greater than 500 yards with my 25-06, the .257 is just more of a good thing.

I watched a guy miss chucks all day one time because the recoil from his 300 RUM was causing a bad flinch.

You might consider a 7mm Wby or 7mm STW. Lots of good bullets and plenty of speed without too much recoil.

You might be on the right track with a 6.5, my personal choice would be a 6.5-06. I have always wanted one for some reason.

From the choices on your list I would do a 300wsm. It would double duty as a hunting rifle too and has good barrel life compared to a 6-284 or 6.5-284 but not as long as a 30BR or 6BR. The down side to the .30 calibers is recoil and muzzle jump. I'd do a HV contour and a muzzle brake.

I personally think the 30-8mm, 300 Weatherby, etc. are even more of a good thing for long range. I've killed chucks over well 800yds with my big .30 caliber magnums shooting 150BT's. The wind does play hell with the lighter bullets but they are more explosive for a rock chuck size animal.

SE,

I would look at the 25-06, 25-06AI and 257 Wby.

1 in 8 twist 243 AI if built on a Remington action, same twist in a 6mm AI on a M70, maybe a 6.5-284 on an M70, twisted fast also.

Man, you guys have come up with some great ideas! I have been looking hard at the 25-06. My grandad had a rem varmint in 25-06, identical to Fotis's 6mm. I would have loved to have gotten that rifle. I really like the idea of a 6.5x284 or maybe 6.5x47. The BR's also intrigue me for some reason. I won't be starting the build anytime soon, but It's great to brainstorm when you're bored.

Post up pics of your long range varmint rigs

I really like this gun! In 6.x284, it would be a nice rig.

I'd go .243 AI... you can get 3250 out of a 24" barreled 1:8" pipe, running Hornady 105 Amaxs with the .500ish BC... that's a load packing 1000 ft/lbs (and still going 2000+ fps) at 800 yards, for very little punishment on the back end. A lot of the "up-chuck" factor is velocity... add a good bit of mass and a... shall I say questionably constructed bullet. Bang for the buck... I don't think there's a better chuck (or coyote... two legged or four) round. Looking for someone to punch my .243 as we speak... it'll do pert'near 3100 with two different powders... 3200-3300 should be possible with the drill to AI.

********** DISCLAIMER ******

Any time I refer to a "chuck" in the above statement... I am refering to the "Rockchuck" or common yellow bellied marmot (Marmota flaviventris... just for you DrMike)... NOT, and I repeat: NOT Chuck Norris.... Just in case he may be reading this. Sorry for the confusion Mr. Norris... Sir.

Love the disclaimer

I would look at a 6.5/284 or something like a 25-06 for your rockchuck gun :)

the 6.5/284 will be good out past the 1000 yard mark this is verifiable i own a full custom and also a 2000 yard range. the 6.5x47 lapua 260 rem and creedmore will also put shots on target past the 1k mark. a 140g berger vld has a g1 bc of .612 and a jlk 140 vld has a g1 bc of .639 a 6.5-284 with proper barrel length will send these bullets at 3000 fps. if i were to build a long range rock chuck deer and antelope rifle i would seriously look at the 6.5/ 284.

took the words right out of my mouth. I would opt for the sporter model though

Try spending most of your free time in a hotel room, instead of messing with your guns!

Maybe .22-250, maybe .243, maybe .308

Kurt,

Your rifles are colourful, if nothing else. They are in interesting chamberings! But, then, every chambering is interesting to a crank.

Thanks man. The savage in 6.5x284 that I have been looking at has a 1-8 twist. It should stabilize the 140gr berger.

A 2000 yard range would be awesome! I don't have anything to shoot that far, but it would still be nice to have.
