Model 70 Trigger Adjustment

Let me know how the trigger spring works for your .300 WSM. I sure wish you could order up the old style trigger and drop it in there. I just closed the deal on a .270 EW today can't wait to try it out.

Holy crap are you right. I had a few old style Winchester triggers that were AWESOME, namely my 270WSM and 7mm Rem Mag, after today, they are virtually all the same. Little to no creep, 2 to 2 3/4lbs and NO overtravel. Took very little work to get them right.

I will order the MOA spring soon.. Although the trigger on my 300 isn't bad at all, so I am not complaining, but the danged old style M70 trigger is SO simple and looks to be really bullet proof. I only have one rifle with the MOA trigger, compared to about 10 or more of the older ones, so I am a little biased. Just the tiniest amount of polishing sear helped with weight and also with creep.. I am very happy I did this. Knowing how to do my own triggers saves me 30-60 bucks everytime a new M70 finds its way home!

It's got all the right stuff!

But heck, Scotty...I didn't help a bit---I thought you were working an MOA trigger. Glad your old-style triggers are responding to the treatment though! I think your MOA trigger will too.

It helped alot. It made me break them down and get dirty, but I learned a TON!

OH! Congrats on the 270WSM... Still my favorite out there.. I think you'll love it. Feed it some RL22 and a steady diet of 150's and you'll be in mountain hunting heaven! That EW should be AWESOME!

Give us some details of your plans!

Glad it worked for you Scotty!

I had to stone the trigger on my FN SPR to get the creep out and you are correct. It takes a little patience, but it really does turn out superbly.

Would that be the 270 EW that was on 24HCF for a really good price?

Yep, very same one. I hit him up with a trade less than 10 min after he first posted it last night. Wasn't quite what he wanted but I had some other stuff. Wound up trading a couple of VX-II Leupy's I had without homes and some cash.

He sold a matching 06 today as well for $800 in a very short time. If I hadn't just put a SS Classic fwt in an 06 in a McMillan Edge I might have wanted that one instead. I've been wanting a M70 in .270 Win for awhile, I just always figured I'd pick up a fwt.

No real plans, just love .270 Winchester's. My first elk rifle was a .270 Win Parker Hale 1200, kind of beat up but I only gave $400 for it. I've killed a couple of deer, most of my elk, and at least a half dozen pronghorn with it, not to mention the several hundred prairie dogs and the occasional coyote.

I'm currently building a .338-06 on a SS Classic action, Pac-Nor SM 3 groove barrel and McMillan Edge. I figured I'd pair it with another smaller caliber rifle for a do all around hunting rifle combination. I wound up with a matching 06 first because I had bid on two seperate auctions not expecting to win both.

I just figure I'll shoot both and decide what I like the best, and possibly sell off the other. Who knows I may rebarrel the 06 to .270 and sell off the EW in the future. I still really want a fwt .270 but the deal on this one was hard to pass up when he offered it up for $800 or trade.

Yup, that is a great price on an EW. Congrats man. It might be just the ticket if the new 150 ABLR's shoot outta your rifle. Running the numbers, it looks like it maintains about 1500 Ftlbs at 600+ yards, started at around 2850.. That shouldn't be hard to get outta the 270 and man, what a package to carry around.

Thanks Pat. Those directions you sent were spot on man.. Now I am just trying not to feel like a total jackwagon for people to adjust my triggers all these years.. Probably would have another M70 in the mix if I added up all of the trigger jobs.

That was a good grab on that EW. I have one in 300WSM, and it is a sweetheart of a rifle. Light as a featherweight, tough as nails stock, and just a well made rifle.

NIB rifles I've seen lately are several hundred more than the asking price was on that 270, so you did quite well.

I think it was Brian Pearce who wrote of hunting in Alaska with a Model 70, maybe a .375 or a .338? The rifle got all gritty & nasty and he just dunked the thing in a stream and rinsed it off that way. Problem solved! That old style Win 70 trigger is a wonderfully simple and rugged design.

A couple of my Model 70's have had aftermarket triggers. One long-range match rifle had a wonderful two-stage trigger by Medesha - wow, that was nice to use. My current .300 WSM was set up with a Jewell trigger by the original owner of that rifle. It has spoiled me a bit.

Win Model 70's are pretty cool rifles, no doubt.

That is a really nice rifle. I have looked at the EW's closely. Not sure I need another M70 in .270 as I already have 3, but can one really have too many .270's.....

I am very excited about the AccuBond LR's as my fav elk/mulie load is the 150gr Partition Gold moly free. It was super accurate in my rifles and just put the hammer down on any elk/mulie I shot into.

Scotty no problem man. Anytime.

That 150 ABLR is going to be awesome Pat. Soon as they hit, we have some load work to do..

That is homework I don't mind doing at all!!!

I am way late in getting onto this topic because I have been pretty sick for a couple of weeks. I have never had a Model 70 that I could not set the trigger down to about 2-1/4 pounds but then I have not owned a lot of the newer Model 70 rifles, post about 1995. I am glad that you were able to easily get springs for that rifle and get it set right.

The Model 70 trigger is a design marvel, considering it was designed in 1935. As you found, they are really simple in geometry and with a little judicious stoning and the proper springs, they can be almost infinitely adjustable for most shooters. The guy that designed the Model 70 trigger was a mechanical wizard, as far as I am concerned, well versed in the KISS principle.
