Moose Opens in Thirteen Days

Okay, so it was a good hunt. It is wet in the bush (rained again last evening and thunderstorms forecast today). We did see quite a number of cow elk (no bulls), cow moose (no bulls) and mule deer (including a fine little buck still in velvet. We'll head out again to see what we can see.

Hope springs eternal; we'll harass the moose again tomorrow. I'm taking a new hunter and his twelve-year-old son out as well as Noah.
 
The new hunter and his son should enjoy being out in the bush with you DrMike. I hope that they get to see game. I have taken new hunters out in the past and they could not mostly see the game that I was pointing out to them. In any event, I hope that they enjoy themselves.
 
Thanks, Charlie. The fellow got his hunters number this past week (challenged the hunter education course) and bought his first tag. He doesn't own a rifle, so I'll be lending him a rifle. That worries me--a borrowed rifle always gets game, and I'm still trying to get Noah on a moose. He and I have a week left before I have to taken him back to the Lower Mainland. Well, we could see two moose, and that will be a lot of work as I'll be the only one there who has even cleaned one of those big dudes.
 
In a way that could be an unfortunate case out of good fortune! I would not like having to clean and dress two moose of any size at my present age! I do not know whether to wish you well or hope that your guests don't see legal game, except for your grandson?
 
It is a challenge, Charlie! I'll get some shuteye and arise at 3 to pursue the noble moose yet again.
 
Thank you, Scotty. Hmmmm. A Ton? That's about the weight of two moose. Oh, well, it will be a good workout. :grin:

HA! I was wondering if you caught that! Again, I hope Noah scores. We are all praying for the lad. The first is always the best... And a moose to boot. Won't be able to wipe the smile off his mug.
 
Mature bulls up here go about 1500 pounds. I'll definitely be looking for young bulls. :mrgreen:
 
We finally started seeing bulls (moose and elk). The weather has cooled somewhat. It was 4 C yesterday morning, and I overshot the road we wanted to turn in on. I was about twenty minutes later than I wanted to be. We walked in about a mile, following multiple fresh moose and elk tracks. I set up a new hunter and his son, and Noah, on a hillside from which we could glass almost the entire valley. Sometime this spring, it was sprayed to kill off deciduous trees. That was not something I wanted to see, but the creek (about 310 yards away) was lush and the adjacent hillside (about 450 yards). If we spotted something browsing, we could work out way over, though it would be a problem getting game back across the creek. I spotted a small black bear and the hind end of a moose. Other than that, it was quiet. We walked in on a couple of other trails, after which the two boys were becoming pretty loud. We had to come out about noon, and both boys fell asleep. I guess three a.m. is somewhat tough on these younguns. We were up and out again this morning. Spotted a young bull elk at about 800 yards and watch him for a while. He had no companions. We were told there was a big bull moose that had come out of the treeline last night. My hunting partner stated that he had a large rack of at least sixty inches. "That'll do," I opined. I'll see if I can't find him this evening.
 
We're definitely beating the bushes and looking hard before Noah has to return to the Lower Mainland.

Just for completeness, Guy, the moose are still in velvet. There is still a bit of growing going on. The elk are "hard horned," but both the mule deer and moose we've seen are still in velvet. There wouldn't be much of a mount with the soft antlers, but still...
 
If Noah was to get a poke at that 60 incher what would his expectations be next year :shock: Lol I am glad that you are starting to see a few animals. Look forward to the next installment.

He's a very happy boy. While at RMR this afternoon, they brought out the Tikka. The stock has been cut down to a twelve inch LOP and the new barrel screwed on. The extractor groove has been cut and the reaming is complete. They showed him the test round. The rifle will be complete next week. He will be returning home next week. However, he has already made his mother promise that he can come back up for a special youth whitetail hunt this fall. I promised him that I would have a load worked up for his rifle and have it sighted in. All he would need to do is accompany me to the range and shoot the scope in for his eyes and he could use it for whitetail (or elk, if he comes a tad earlier). He was walking on a cloud when we left the shop.
