node help

1000 yards is as far as I will shoot at an animal and that's only if things are damn near perfect. Honestly 800 yards will be pushing it for me. The longer distances will be just out long range shooting with a few guys in the Utah longrange group. That's if I get something I can compete with. I wwould like to try the 168 grain bullets but im not sold at all on bergers.

Bergers do work... I've witnessed it first hand... Bang, flop!

Those were 175's from my sons 30-06...

The Nosler ABLR's operate on the same principle... Explode the nose for quick trauma.... The difference being the solid boat tail will stay together no matter what.

Muzz,
IMO, you have the right rifle for what you want.
Just tweak a little with the RL26, it'll work out for you I think.
I have both a 7 Mag and the Ackley, not because I'm shooting any great distance, just because.
Take RR up on his offer to help, he has really gotten dialed in on the Ackley and this stuff.

RR,
Thanks for the math check.
If it helps on calculations, checking chrono versus QL I have found the RL26 Ba between .369 and .377.

One of the guys I have shot with told me to use the berger 168's. He said there killing machines. He also told me to stay away from the ablr's. So who knows. I just bought a new box of the 150 ablr's this afternoon. maybe I should have gotten the bergers

im just curious as to this load the only difference is 140 gr bullet and 3" more barrel.
280 AI
27" Brux Sendero barrel
215gm primer
Once fired Nosler Brass
63.3 grains of RL 26 (case "feels/shakes" like probably over 97% full)
140AB
.080 off lands
OAL approx 3.33
Magento Speed velocities but groups tested with out it!

Avg MV at 3,260 fps

215 primers vs my 210's I would think this would add more pressure then my 210's

does 10 grains more bullet weight change that much on my loads?

Im gonna give this load a whirl in mine. I have about 60 140's left.

QL says it should chrono around 3170 in your 24" barrel.

BTW, if I remember correctly, Dr Mike put the hurt on an elk with his 280 and the 150 ABLR a while back.

Dewey,
I have ordered the latest QuickLoad update, and it arrived a few days ago.... But as usual, I haven't been home to install it in my laptop yet, may be a week or 3 yet. So I don't have the RL26 on mine yet...

Thanks for your help.

What do you say DR. Was you impressed with the ablr on your bull?

The 150 ABLR is a solid 600 yard elk bullet.... Even from a 280 Remington at 2,950 fps.

Heck, it'll retain enough energy for 500 yard elk even from a 7mm-08 (24" barrel)

The form factor of that bullet is fantastic.

Primers... It's a toss up...

One may work better than the other, then it may not.

I use CCI BR2's... Because I have about a gazillion of them, so far I've seen no reason change (but it is early in the game)...

Muzz, I don't think you'd gain enough with a 7mm Rem Mag over your 280 Ackley to really notice. If you wanted more, I think you'd have to jump into the 7-300 Win, 7 MSM, 28 Nosler or other large 7.

I think your probably alot closer than you think. Sometimes it just takes a minute to step back and take a breath.

Trying some 7828 would be a good option or RL22/23 or MRP. Those sit right in the perfect burn rate for the cartridge. It has plenty of juice to get out far with the right bullet.

Sometimes it might be worth working a ladder out at 300-500 yards. That'll help you find that node as well. 10-15 rounds and you should see it. After that, small tweaks should have you shooting very well.

Boy I just reread this whole post and I'm going to take some advil to releave my head ache.
I have gotten a better idea of how the numbers in QL work or what they mean where before I was in the dark. :? I was only looking at powder charge, velocity and chamber pressure every thing else was Greek to me. OH no offense Fotis just a figure of speech.  advil kicking in.

Well truckdriver at least your just reading it and it's not your rifle. I'm on a two day headache.
