I have really liked this powder and it has given great accuracy and velocity from my 280 AI. Right now I have a killer load running a 160 AB on top of R26. With the cost of these Alliant Reloder powders and there being nearly impossible to find, I've got to start looking for a new go to powder. On the burn charts it shows N165, IMR 7828ssc, N565, N170, MagPro, H1000, and Ramshot Magnum on both sides of R26. They are all cheaper than Alliant stuff right now. I have IMR 7828ssc, it shows really good results. What's another powder that would be great in the 280AI?
I still have a few pounds of R26 so I'm not out yet, but I've got to plan for the next ammo/component shortage ;) . thanks

here is a powder chart from quickload . just watch the case fill % I have it set on 115% . I like to work in around 105% max , give or take a little . RL26 looks to be the ideal powder for this combo ,good velocity and good case fill .

thanks, I'm shooting 60.5 grs of R26 and its running 3065. 25" barrel. it looks like Magpro, Magnum, 7228ssc, N560 and a few others I never see around here are right there in that ideal range then. thanks again

The 100 series will always take more powder to get the same speed as to non compressed. A few cartridges will be an exception. I bought 160 and 165 for a try, but haven't used any yet. Not sure how much you can compress it? I have a load of blue dot near 120% .

I’ve been looking at N560 for a replacement for RL26 when I run out. It gives close to the case fill and only trails velocity by a short bit.

560 is more available than other 500 series powders. 565 is becoming more available.

Not to speak for him, but JD338 has an incredible load running the 160 AB on top of RL22. It’s still an Alliant powder, but I’ve seen it around more than I have the mythical RL26. I had some promising work with 7828 before I got ahold of RL26 back in 2013. I tell you, after seeing JD’s success with the cartridge, I believe a lot of us jumped on the 280AI bandwagon.

With the prospects of close to same fps it's the performance that gets lost in moa. Wish it weren't so!

N565 and H1000 are virtually identical in my 6.5prc. With the same charge weight, 58grs with 147 ELD-M'S, the speeds are within 10fps. I shoot 55grs of R26 with the same 147's and get the same velocity as H1000 and N565.

I dont think you'll get close to R26 speed from N560. The burn rate might be similar but the energy is lower with N560.

I was surprised by the list of powders and how little variation there was in performance. Clearly accuracy is the key but seems like a lot of options…at least when the world goes back to normal.

Thanks Jim for the table.

I think Magpro might be worth a look.I haven't used it too much but I've been studying some of the Quick Load data DrMike has posted and it looks like it might be a close runner for Reloader 26.It's a real heavy by volume powder like Reloader 26.I want to try it in my 30-06's with 180gr + bullets.I can put 67.0grs in a Winchester 30-06 case and still have room to seat a bullet.Would I load that much in a case with a 180gr bullet?Probably not,but I plan on starting around 63.0grs,watch my velocity and pressure and see what it does. The burnrate is right there near the H1000,Reloader 26.
