Reloading the BIG 7mm's (RUM or STW), just curious.

I finally got a set of RCBS 7mm STW dies, and loaded some test loads. Started with 140 grn SGK over Retumbo and 150 grn NBT over Retumbo and tried some RL22 as well.

I didn't have any time to test them tonight, but tried anyway. shot the 3 140 grain loads and 3 150 grain loads. It was 945PM when I got set up and 955 when I stopped due to lack of light. the 140's were 2 paired @ .83" with a flyer opening things up to over 3" and the 150 NBT were .785" with 1 flyer opening the group to 1.76" . I wasn't happy about my shooting, but the rifle shoots fine. I was shooting from a lead sled and had difficulty getting comfortable, however the biggest problem was visibility. THere was a pretty good wind too, but it didn't have much bearing due to the short range and high velocity and BC round it acted on.

I'm very happy about how this gun shoots, just under 1/2" MOA minus the bullet diameter and the flyers. I will be glassing or pouring some lead into that synthetic stock to add weight and reduce the kick. The work removing the tight spot on the stock and retightening the scope mounts(they were loose) paid off.

Now those are not the best groups, but for a rifle that I assumed needed a new tube I'm happy.

My father has had a couple of stw's and I remember him saying that he shot lighter weight bullets for speed and accuracy also.

Nice start Jtoews.
I'm glad the new rifle is starting to work out for you.

Tight spots are seldom your friend.

Once you get to shoot with some decent light, and play with your loads abit, you're going to end up with one fine shooting rifle.

I just got back from testing some 140 gr. TTSX's in my 7 STW.

79.0 grs. IMR-7828 shot right at .5" at 100 yds with Rem brass and Federal GM215M's. (This same load shoots .6" with the 140 gr. AccuBonds)

76.0 grs. RL-22 shot .75".

I am anxious for my 150 gr. E-Tips to arrrive.......

The Browning is very accurate with 150 grn Btips, the 160 Accubonds I've yet to find a reciepe for, but I'm waiting for some surplus powder. I've got some WC 860 and WC868 coming. I'm hoping that the slower powder will let me use the 160 grain bullets with a 1-9.5" twist, but will settle for the 150 grain B-tips and possibly try 140 Ab's or 150 NPT's for Elk. It didn't really like 160 SGK's in factory ammo AT ALL!!!

That is the update.

Decided to take my Ruger #1 out to test some reloads, and seems like I found a shooter!
Load is 160gr AccuBond, 80grs RL25, R-P brass. This group measures .86" at 100yds. Not bad for my first load trials.

JT, those 160gr AB will shoot just fine over WC860. I've shot 1/4" moa groups with that combination. I will probably be playing with it a little bit tomorrow.
