Well, my Son & I made it out this a.m. braving the cold weather to both shoot our new toys. ( His Savage Cub T .22 & my new toy Rem 700 SPS in .257 Weatherby )

I loaded 20 rounds starting @ the minimum book load with Viht N-165 and figured I'd use those to get sighted in. Then 6 more at the half way point and 6 @ the book max of 69.5 grains.

To my suprise after the first round the case came out "BLACK".... no other signs of case damage / primer issues etc..... I've heard, but yet to confirm that Remington no longer test fires their guns before leaving the factory.....?? I couldn't see this being the issue, but thought one more.... yep, the second case came out black....
A group gathering / call to Mr. Information JD338 and both thinking the same thing.... not enough pressure....

Up to the next loads.... still a slight amount of blow-back, but much better.

The max loads and all is good.... these were the last four shots... sure hope I pulled the lower one...

JD338.... THANK YOU !!

Always happy to help, if I can.
Nice looking group for sure, just wait until you find "your" load and you shoot in better conditions! That rifle of your is going to be a shooter.
You might try some of the loads that bullet and POP have used. Might be worth the effort. The COL looks fine too.

Brand new Weatherby....

( Kid had a blast with the Savage by the way.... This little Cub has the Accu-Trigger... what a set up )

And thats the best part!

I have the same rifle.
I bet you will love it. I get very very tight groups with ramshot magnum and a 100 grain TSX.
I want to try the 100 grain Partition and the 110 grain acubond soon.

My first thought when reading your post was "not enough pressure". Love it when I'm right!

Curious, how much bullet is seated in the case? It looks they are loaded waaaayyyy out there. Just wondering.

It's getting harder and harder to resist buying one of those .257s! Of course, with my luck, I'd get the only one Remington made that didn't shoot.

What scope are you running? I always thought a Leupy 4.5-14 was about perfect.

I set my COAL @ 3.441 there is .293in of the bullet seated into the case... somewhat going by the rule of at leat the diameter of the bullet in the case....?? It's still a l o n g ways from the magazine max length not to mention the lands.....

I actually ended up taking the 4.5 X 14 Zeiss off my .300RUM and putting on it.....
I'm almost thinking now of putting my 6 X 18 with the LRDV reticle on it and playing with some yotes next month....

Powerstroke, did you do any barrel break in or are these the first bullets down the tube?
Did you "bed the stock or is it bone stock.
Does it have a pressure point?

It appears you have a shootin machine!!

This was the break in... .. I didn't get carried away with cleaning between shots... shoot, run a couple dry patches, shoot... The last four were consecutive.
Everything bone stock, no trigger job etc.....
Pressure point....
The barrel is jammed so tight into the stock... down the sides and front that it isn't even funny. I'm amazed myself at this point it even stays on the paper. Next trip out will be fun.

Only REMs which I am aware of that are NOT pressure pointed are the senderos/heavy barreled varminters.............though I have had VLS' s that were not.

Nice shooting. Everything looks good so far. IMR 7828 can get those velocities up a bit. I'm seeing 3525fps average with the 110 nab and very good accuracy.

I knew they do as a general rule, but I did not know about these 257 SPS's, since not a std. deal.

Thanks for the info Ridgerunner, shows great promise.

I got the book out on my Remington .257 weatherby.
I have not experimented with it whole lot , but it is an outstandingly acurate rifle.
My 1st hand load was a 100 grain hornady flat base over73.5 grain of H-1000. The 1st 3 shots were .50. The remaining 4 rounds I used to adjust tword the center of the target, but I got 2 rounds touching and then adjusted again and had another 2 touching.
I switced to a load of the excelent 120 grain Partition over 67 grains of IMR-7828.( I hear this is a great powder for the .257.) I got a .90 for 5 and a 1.25 for the 2nd five.
She did not like the 115 grain tripple shock to well.
Then I tried the 100 grain hornady over 69 grains of RL-22.
3 shot groups of .75 .85 1.40. I think I let it get a bit to hot for that last group.
Then i started playing with a 100 grain tsx.
70.5 grains of RL-22 gave me .45
72 grains gave me .50
next time out i took the chrony. And after a tip From John barnsness ,aka Mule deer at 24 HR campfire I tried Ram shot magnum.
stared at 74.5 grs. and worked up to 76.
I had groups of .44, .586 and .832 for an avarage of .61.
The chrony at 76 grains read 3553.
I am gonna have to play with this one a little more.
I think its an ugly darn rifle, But obviously it freakin well shoots.
Way more sub moa groups than over moa.
I used federal 215 ms in all my loads.
I plan to try some more stuff like the 110 acubond and mabye the 100 grain Partition.
But I really need to play with that 100 grain hornady flat base.
I mean it certanly shoots well from my rifle, and it is the bullet that wetherby factory ammo used for a long time, and it is comparitivly inexpensive.

Did they make the SPS in 257 Bee? Where can I get one?

Pop
thanks for posting that chart.
can you tell me what the 1st two figures mean, Step ? & fill. Is fill a case capacity used measument ?
I sure might get a box of the AccuBond 110s to try in my .257 weatherby, But I just loaded my last 8 into .257 Roberts AI cases.
I shot up quite a few of those 110s from 2 rifles chamberd for the standard roberts and also a 25,06.
so far no luck in the acuracy department.
I have hard great luck with 7mm Acubonds and also with .375s.
My winchester clasic 7mmSTW and my hunting buddies old Remington 7mm MAG not to mention my Ruger #1A in 7X57 all drive tacks with 160 grain acubonds.
My stw, over a stiff charge of H-1000 , onece put 3 into a center to center group measurment of .17,best group I ever shot. and that was at 3200 FPS. And I often get .25 for 3.
And My frends 7 mag seems to like RL-22 or RL-19 both and he has taken several good sized muler deer and a couple Rosevelt Elk.
Loves them.

Found a can of IMR 7828 yesterday so I'll play with that powder now too...
Thx again for the input.
