I had a 2x7 Leupold SABR on mine when I started. Worked well, didn't like the SABR center reticle. I went to a VXR 1.25x4 #4 reticle and I LOVE IT!! I don't see that scope coming off the rifle, well, unless I wanna use the XS sights but overall, I can't ever see it happening..

I have a plain old M8 4X on the 444 and like that scope alot..

Does that scope base have the flip up XS rear peep?
Having an M8-4X is like having a spare scope for every rifle you own!

Nope, it isn't a flip up scope, I actually keep the peep in the stock pouch. Takes a Gerber or penny to put it on.. I really like the set up..

Yeah, I have two of the M8 4X's. Love them both actually.

Hi Dewey,

I have a Leupold VX-3 1.75-6x32mm on my 1895 Guide gun. It is fantastic in low light!

A 45-70 in a Ruger #1 can be loaded full tilt and will perform quite well.

Scott

Amen! The Ruger #1 is sleek and thin and carries extremely well. It's just a very classy looking rifle that is a joy to shoot and to hunt with.

45-70 in a Ruger #1..

Look what the buggers did to me! Now if this was a 1B in 280 Rem I'd be all over it. Still very very nice!
Ruger 1A in .280 Remington

The Marlin the other folks are showing are also very very nice. I don't think you could go wrong with one of them either. Low power variables as shown look nice and really compliment the rifle. Dang that JD and Scotty sure are sharp fellows!!

Yessir I agree.
First, the No 1s are classy looking rifles. Those you have are nice.
Second, these guys deck em out nice
Third, you end up "needing more of them"

JD, that's a sweet setup. Thanks!

Good point
Hadn't considered that one
Cool cartridge, but I'm afraid it's not on DNRs list

Another vote for the 44 mag, I'd love to be able to use my 444 P guide gun. Ohio is always a few steps behind the times compared to the states that boarder us when it comes to deer hunting with rifles!:( you can hunt Coyotes and hogs with anything short of dynamite but you can't hunt deer with a rifle? And you can also use a 357 to 500 S&W for gun season with a handgun.

The majority of my deer hunting is with a bow or muzzleloader.

Another great consideration is a 375 Winchester. I think of it as a small 45-70.
I have two Marlin lever rifles. They are sleek and quick handling. One I use with cast 235 gr bullets. The other is set up for Hornady 220 gr FP

No doubt the 45-70 is the big gun but a nice Marlin or Winchester in 375 will do anything you want for deer and or black bear.

My cast bullet load is a mild load that is a pleasure to shoot

I do also have a guide gun in 45-70 that can shoot mild to wild.

Good luck

Found out via email from ODNR that the proposal is now adopted and is official.
The earlier list are the official cartridges.
Exciting.
Thanks for all the ideas. Cool stuff.

That's great news! I'd be very excited about it. Congrats and let the shopping begin!

Yessir.
Excellent news.
Believe I "need" a guide rifle

Awesome Dewey!
The 1895 Guide gun in 45-70 will be a hammer.
Pick up some H322 powder and some Nosler 300 gr BST bullets.

Yep, I will. Thanks JD!
Believe I may also try those Speer HP along with the Noslers that Scotty posted up in the bullet tests. They sound pretty cool also.

If you can find them, give the Speers a try. They are fantastic in the 45-70 and expand really well. Accurate as heck in my 45-70 and a few others. H322, H4198, IMR4198, IMR3031, RL7, and a slew of others will work real well in the 45-70.
