Sportman’s Warehouse

I like our local Sportsman's Warehouse. It's big, they took over an entire Sears store. I was surprised and pleased at the quality of fly fishing gear offered. We no longer have a small local fly fishing shop, but I can get anything I want at Sportsman's.

Reloading components & tools are good at ours. Lots of Hornady bullets & Hodgdon powders. Primers of course are in short supply these days, but they used to stock everything needed.

Factory ammo isn't bad. The usual cases of 9mm, 45, 223 etc. Also some nice "premium" ammo from Federal, Weatherby, Hornady etc...

I was surprised and pleased at the selection of optics from low-budget items up through Swarovski etc...

"The wall of Handguns" - my term for it, is a bit overwhelming for many newcomers. I took a few of my handgun students there to select their first handgun. Prices have been decent and the selection pretty impressive.

Rifles... Wow! They run some sales! I picked up a 6mm Creed Ruger Precision Rifle for I think $749. Heck I thought those rifles were well priced at $1100 at that time - oh - I'd never loaded 6 Creedmoor, so I also picked up a couple of boxes of Hornady loaded match ammo, Hornady dies, two types of powder and a bag of brass - all on the same visit! :) Walked out of there with a new rifle, ammo, and everything I needed to handload the 6 Creedmoor.

Another great sale - I gotta stop walking by the firearms department when I have cash in my wallet...

I hadn't had a 45-70 lever action in about 10 years, but knew that I had dies, brass, bullets etc because someday I wanted to get another Marlin 1895. Well... Walking past the rifle section and glancing kinda casually to see what sort of leverguns they had... "Hey, there's a brand new Marlin 1895 with a $548 price tag on it!" LOL. Yes, one made by Remington, but it looked and felt good and I bought it right then. It's turned out to be a good rifle, reliable and accurate.

Heck, bought my kayak there too! I'd forgotten that. They had to order it for me, but I knew what I wanted and they got it within a couple of days at a good price then helped me load it and lash it down for the trip home.

Personnel? Well, kinda variable. Some folks are there who don't seem to have a clue about sporting goods, but by and large the folks in the various departments seem to know their products. I know a lot of the guys in the firearms department because we're all members of the same local gun clubs and hunters associations.

For me, Sportsman's Warehouse gets a pretty enthusiastic thumbs up. However, there are two older, local sporting goods stores that I prefer to patronize if I can. I like supporting the locally owned stores.

Regards, Guy

The closest to me is Roanoke, and have been in it 8 or 9 times, and found them to be pretty daggone good at keeping what I need/want in stock. Haven't been since the current shortages began, but they used to have a great selection of reloading stuff. Prices seemed to be in line with BPS, cabelas, etc. Pretty much anything hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, reloading, you name it, they will have it, or something close to what you're looking for. The only improvement they could make is have somebody follow me around and when I grab something off the shelf and say "OOOOH, I need this" the employee could say to me "But do ya really?"

Sounds like someone spends a lot of time there.
We have a Dicks and Camping World (was a Gander Mountain) which are nothing more than a overprice clothing store. I’m hoping this turns out to be a real sportsman store.

My experience around here...there ammo is way over priced. Otherwise, as noted wide variety of stuff, good service with people who know more than sales. CL

I have had ups and downs with the one here in town and have actually refused to patronize nearly a year 2 different times. But a good price eventually gets me back in. Do note online sale prices does not mean they are in store sale prices on some products, even if they can't be bought online such as powder a year ago, I am still pissed at that.
As Guy mentioned some staff is very good, others not so much, and some have actually scared me enough that i won't approach the counter if they are behind it.

I started going to them back in about 2003, visiting a few stores in the Utah area. For the stores I am used to, I think the quality has gone down hill a little, but much of that may just be me being crochety. It used to be that I could walk into one and find all manner of oddball calibers both in firearms and ammo; 338-06 comes to mind, as does .307 Win. More recently? Not so much. Yes, a lot of that has to do with the way things are in general, but I suspect part of it has to do with them being bought out by Great America (Bass Pro/ Cabelas).

So, I suppose, to answer the question, they are a really good place to pick up a lot of different stuff. I do recommend them, but I preferred when they were independent.

I suppose I wouldn't be upset if a Sportsman's Warehouse came to the area, they seem to have a decent supply of things online. But no Sportsman's Warehouse would've been calling me numerous times last yr asking if I wanted to buy another brick of primers they kept back for me like a local shop did. You can't beat relationships built and the service you get at some small shops.

Dick's Sporting Goods? We have 1 within decent driving distance. Each to their own, but I wouldn't shop there with somebody else's wallet.

Nearest sportsman's is two hour drive, over in Walla Walla, Washington. Also the nearest Home Depot. Always worth the stop but I have to pay Washington sales tax. Next would be Boise, three hours. Where we go for specialty medical care. Boise also has a Cabelas. I never go to Cabelas anymore. Always try to plan a stop at sportsman's.

Ouch. I thought the sale had fallen through. Not good!

Worked there part time and full time for 5 years. Good store ("ok" care for their employees) but their supplier is lacking.
Where Scheel's gets all the primers and powders in they can not. At least that has been the case in Wyoming/Colorado.

Rant:

There’s one in Juneau where we have to go for most of our supply. I don’t like it. There used to be a mom and pop gunshop in town, had a lot of stuff. He had some issues with ATFE of his own making, but he was getting through it. He had a ton of reloading supply. Sportsman’s pulled into town, had a lot more guns but way less reloading supply. What they did have was a little cheaper. So, they put him out of business. Now, Sportmans has nothing for reloading supply. Even as reloading stuff is becoming available in the retail world, they still have nothing for powder or primers. Oh there’s plenty of bass fishing supply and $30/50 9mm practice ammo though.

When you take someone in business out in a smaller Alaska town, that’s OK but you’d better be able to replace or better what they were doing. That’s just the way it is here. Sportsman’s bean counters don’t get that.

I am beginning to loathe them😡

Looks like we’re getting one here in Central WI. I have purchased from them online , but how are their stores. This is kinda funny there is a Dicks just down the street.
We have one in Kelso, Washington that is okay but it isn't very big. They have had a hard time keeping their shelves stocked in the past two years. It's getting better but reloading supplies and ammo are nothing to write home about. I found the local hardware store in La Grande, Oregon had a better selection in everything. I'm not sure who is ordering their smokeless powder for them but what I have seen in the past 2 years looks like they get what was left in the truck after everyone else got their deliveries. Last year it took me nearly an hour and a number of abortive attempts just to get my hunting and fishing license with the proper tags (something I could have done myself in 5 minutes online). On the plus side, it is conveniently located and there aren't many other options in this area. If I really need something, Portland is close enough to make stopping at the Sportsman's there an option.

One plus is I drive by that location everyday to work. If it turns out to be lack luster , I’m not out any gas money for a special trip to it.

There are three within 45 minutes of my house (utah) and I will pass them all to go to scheels -1hour. They carry name brands we all like but their sales staff/customer service is just awful. I still use a small local store for all my gun purchases. Recently they took down the vast majority of their taxidermy and just put up some generic posters and pictures. Now they have a very generic sporting goods store appearance and feel. I go to them once In awhile and wander around but rarely spend much money there.

I’ve been to both Scheels in WI , yes there’re nice but they overpriced me out of their market.

They opened yesterday , today I stopped in. There was a fair amount of powder there. Prices were all over the place. I did grab some Blue Dot at $39.99. They have a pile of Fed 205M at $7and some odd cents per 100 limit 2 though.
