My son asked me a question last night and the more I thought about it the better the question got. I had to throw this on here and let you folks have at it. :)
He asked this... You can only have 5 guns. Handgun, long gun, whatever....just 5? It can't be any more than 5. Which 5 do you select? Be caliber specific where applicable

My 5

Win Model 70 300WSM
Any SXS 12 ga with a splinter fore-end.
Glock model 32
Ar-15 M4 version
Colt 1911

Please don't cheat as I know it is hard not to list more. The beauty of the question. Just 5. Maybe we can do a second round later.

M70 270WSM
M70 338WM
Rem 11-87 12 gauge
Ruger SBH 44 Rem Mag
Kimber 1911

Winchester Model 70 30-06
Ruger #1B 6mm Remington
Springfield Armory XD40 .40 S&W
Ruger Redhawk .12 ga over/under
CZ .22 LR bolt action rifle w/walnut stock

M70 270WSM...big game, self defense-sniper rifle
Ar-15 middy... self defense, small game-big game
Glock 23...self defense
10/22...small game
Browning Citori 12ga...small game, only shotgun I own

And where can I get one of these?
Ruger Redhawk .12 ga over/under
Sorry David could not help myself. I know you meant Red Label

Keeping it to 5 would be really hard but if I had to it would probably be:
12ga Benelli SBE
6BR in Remington 700
30-8mm in Remington 700 or a .338Edge/Lapua
.416 Rem in Remington 700 could substitute a .375 here as well.
a pistol in some flavor (I'm not a pistol guy at all so I'd actually have a hard time picking one despite having 5 or so)

I'd skip the 22LR for the 6BR so I had something with a wider range of usefullness.

12 gauge o/u Parker
22-250/20 gauge o/u custom
30-06 Win Model 70
375 H & H Win model 70 or Mauser
1911 colt

Marlin 39a .22 rifle

Kimber .45 w/ night sights

Beretta Optima 12 guage with extra slug barrel

Kimber .300WSM (montana model)

Remington 700 .338 RUM

#1 pick of all time is my Rem 700 in 280!

Followed by, but in no particular order:

12ga Benelli SBE
Marlin 39A 22lr
Kahr CM9 9mm
Rem 700 custom in 22-250

Hmmm? Tough one. Well, since I use to have very few guns and could shoot them all well, opposite of now, I would have to go with those:
pre 64 Win Mdl 70 .300 WM (or a Kimber Montana today)
Marlin 39 .22
Rem 870 3" 12 ga
S&W Highway Patrol 4" .357 (or a 686 today)
S&W Mdl 63

Hard decision

A 5 gun battery isn't bad if you are able to focus on actual intended use and not how much fun they are or how emotionally attached we are to them.

For me, I chose from what I currently own, sorry 270WSM, even though you are my favorite, you didn't make the list. :

Rem 700 SS 300SAUM or 300WSM
Either M700 or M70 243
11-87 12 ga
Ruger 10/22
Springfield XDM 40

If there comes a situation where it is necessary for open sights, I can use the 11-87 with slugs or XD just as well as any rifle with irons.

My five:

Winchester Mod 21 12ga sxs
Ruger 77/17HMR
Win 70CRF 6mmAI
Win 70CRF Safari grade 375 H&H
Kimber 1911 stainless Pro Carry II

This took some thinking and sacrifice! :(

Decided to select from the guns I already own:

.45 1911 - Kimber

12 ga shotgun - Beretta 390

.22 Marlin 39A

.308 Rem 700

.375 H&H Ruger Number One

I could continue doing everything I currently do with those five. Target competition, bird hunting, small game, plinking, varmint shooting and big game hunting for pretty much anything. The .45 is also my primary "work" gun, so I wouldn't have to carry an issue Glock!

It was a hard choice between the .375 and other, more practical rifles like my .25-06, .30-06 and the .300 WSM. The .308 though - it had to stay.

Over the past few years I've been real tempted to sell off a bunch of guns and get down to a few, perhaps not five, but only a few more. Just to simplify a bit.

Looking over the lists submitted, there's a surprising number of .22 Marlin 39A's, and I was also surprised by the number of .375's mentioned...

No surprise at all to me that the 1911 came up frequently, a 12 gauge of some sort, and of course all kinds of nice hunting rifles!

Beretta Extrema
Some sort of 1911
M70 EW 7 WSM
M700 Classic .35 Whelen
M700 .223

Might replace the 1911 with a 4" S&W 29/629. Actually, probably would.

I suspect that when I get a .375 H&H, it might bump the Whelen off the list.

Interesting... no rimfires. Hmmm.

257 Bee ultralight
378 Bee Lazermark
77/22 22 lr
Benelli SBE
S&W 629 44 mag

Remington Mod. 870 12guage

S&W Mod. 629

Winchester Mod. 67A .22

Browning A-Bolt Stainless Long Range Hunter 6.5 Creedmore

Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker .325 WSM

700 LSS 338 RUM
M1895 45-70
M541T-HB 22 Rim Fire
M11-87 12 ga 3.5" Mag
Kimber 1911 Tactical Pro II 45 ACP

Thank GOD this is pretend!
