Varget Available at Hodgdons

Varget is starting to show up at some LGS here in New Mexico....expensive but a lot less than Hodgdon. People really paying that kind of coin for Varget?

Not anywhere close to that price here but still has made a significant price jump. I just did a trade on some recently delivered Varget at a LGS and it was priced at $46.75 per lb. The one I bought before that has a sticker of $30.99 on it. Maybe from 2 yrs ago, I don't know.

One thing these shortages and high prices has done is bring back the art of bartering

Done a fair amount of it in the last 2 yrs. Traded 2 partial cans of old powder for bullets 2 different times.......got some boxes of 30 caliber and 35 caliber. Also got a couple boxes of once fired 35 Rem brass. I like using what I already got to get stuff when it works out where both parties have what the other wants in trade.

As far as Im concerned, they can roll it and smoke it @ 63 per pound plus hazmat and shipping

Very useful powder. Glad I went into the current shortage well stocked with it.

Hodgdon is probably trying to steer reloaders towards their distributors, and only offering it retail as a sideline. $60+ per pound hurts the ol' wallet.

It isn't just Varget that has gotten expensive. We've seen major increases in the cost of powder, bullets, brass, primers, and ammunition across the board. As long as there is this great demand for products out there the price isn't coming down soon, if ever again. I know that it has caused me to reduce the amount of recreational shooting that I do.

I feel very fortunate to have recently gotten 8 lbs of Varget for $305.

Good deal, I would grab it and it used to be cheaper before the shortage. I found 10 one pounders last year at a local gun shop for 35 a pound which isn't bad at all. Still have close to half a 8 pounder left currently but I'm not shooting as much as I used to. Hopefully all goes back to normal soon. Varget is the only powder I use for the .308 and the 6BR.

That's exactly the deal. I spoke with Hodgdon and they price their powders higher that their channel partners so they don't compete with them. I did but 5 lbs of IMR4064 from them earlier this year.
I got lucky with Rutumbo buying 8 pounders for $139 and $199 but that was pre pandemic.
Looking forward, at least we are starting to see powders becoming available. Buy what you can when you can and hopefully primers will become more readily available in the near future.

Back in June two pounds of Reloder 16 ended up costing me $75.76/lb. $52.99 ea for the powder the rest was shipping/HazMat and sales tax.
