    Model 81

Thank you all for the kind words regarding my Model 81. Here is a sample of the calendar art I referred to.

Here is a photo of my Remington Model 81 in .300 Savage. A classic rifle in a classic caliber!

    Model 81

You're being too hard on the old gal by calling it a clunker. First of all, the Remington 8 and the later 81 rifles were the first semi-auto rifles capable of handling high power cartridges and that, in itself, makes it an iconic design. It was designed by old John M. himself and works on the...

    Sight screws

The easiest way is just to use the plug screws you removed from the receiver when you installed your scope. Some of the screws with the radiused heads are often too long for the hole, especially on the front sight holes. I've had better luck with just the straight-sided plug screws. Go to any...

Cast bullet fun with my .375H&H

For some medium-bore fun without the usual recoil punishment, you might try loading up some 264 gr. cast bullets from the Lyman 2660449 mold, along with 28 gr. of XMP5744. In my 70's vintage Winchester Model 70 accuracy is decent with iron sights and that heavy bullet hits my iron swinger with...

    300 H&H Magnum

Re: On the wisdom of converting a 98 Mauser action to .300H&H. P.O. Ackley, Jerry Kuhnhausen ("The Mauser Bolt Actions: A Shop Manual") and others all stand corrected, Old Trader! That bottom locking lug recess isn't really necessary anyhow. Krags do just fine with one locking lug. LOL...

    300 H&H Magnum

Just a comment here for Mortis. A standard Brno Mauser 98 action will have 12 tpi V threads just like all 98's. Actually it is a metric thread but 12 tpi is almost identical. Use a thread gauge on the receiver threads if you want to check this out. A standard length 98 action will be too...

What is your favorite oddball round.

Am I the only one who loves the 25-20? It is the perfect close range pest rifle.

    Imperial Sizing Wax and Unique

Imperial sizing wax is the thing to use when forming cases and you really need a lube up for that tough job. I take a pipe cleaner with a bit of Imperial to lube the case necks to prevent expander ball drag.

A Brace of Newer Cannons at the Range

Very attractive rifles and darn fine groups, but I know that old Ross wants to go hunting too! You nail a critter with it and that will be a major highlight of your hunting career. It would make my day, too!

    Colt 1911 owners

I'm old-school when it comes to 1911's, the fewer frills the better. I figure if old John M. Browning wanted duck-bill grip safeties, extended slide releases and ambidextrous safties, he would have designed the pistol that way. When I carried a Remington-Rand 1911A1 in Vietnam, I never thought...

    I'm up to six now!

    One cannot own too many 30-06's or 1911 pistols. I currently have 8 rifles in 30-06. 1. M-1 Garand 2. 1903 Springfield 3. Mod. 54 Winchester 4. FN Supreme 5. 1903 Springfield sporter 6. 1950 Husqvarna 7. Husqvarna "Husky" (short forearm and schnabel) 8. S & W Model D (Husqvarna-made)...

    @@@%$% Lee dies

Out of curiosity, I'd take the spindle out entirely and resize a case. Measure the o.d. of the neck. Then re-install the spindle, inside neck lube another case and then resize. Compare neck diameter dimensions of both cases to see just how much you are reducing/expanding the necks. You...

    Unique powder

Unique powder and the .45 Colt cartridge go together like a hotdog and mustard! Don't worry about the bore residue, just clean afterwards like you should anyway. A great old powder which I hope lasts another 100 years.

    Winchester Model 70 safety

When put on safe, the safety cams back the striker assembly a small amount. There is a cam surface on the shaft of the safety, as well as a cam surface on the striker. If the tolerances are not just right, the safety will be difficult to put on safe. The safety/striker assembly should be...

    30-30s (pic)

Here is a photo, SJB358, of my 1886 and Model 71 Winchester rifles. The 86 is in .33 Winchester and was purchased years ago at Gamelines Sporting Goods on Pearl St. in Boulder, Colorado before Pearl St. went yuppie with boutiques, vegetarian cafes and coffee shops. The Model 71 was purchased...

    .280 Ross

I'm still working on a favorite load, Dr. Mike. The rifle seems to like heavier bullets best, so I'm shooting 175 gr. Hornady spire points. I have a box of Woodleigh's but I'll save them until I get matters more fine-tuned, since they are so pricey. So far I've used IMR4350 from 52gr. up to...

    Browning Machine Gun

Here's one more photo of the big .50 taken apart for cleaning and without her clothes on. As has been said, old John M. Browning was a design genius! And they talk about how long the M-16 platform has lasted with our military? Compared to the M-2, the M-16 is just old enough to shave.

    Browning Machine Gun

I found a dusty old photo which all you Browning machine gun admirers might enjoy. You can't see much of the gun, just the ominous end of the flash hider peeking over the rim of the sandbags.

    .280 Ross

Gents: I will try to attach a photo of my 1910 Ross during a morning of load testing. If this does not work, please bear with me while I figure this attachment business out. DCD
