I just bought a Winchester 70 in 270 WSM and was trying to get a good idea of what to feed it! I've got some 130 gr PT, 140 gr BT, 140 gr Hornady SPBT, and 150 gr Speer HCSP. I've got a pretty good assortment of powders: H1000, Hybrid 100V, H4831, H4350, H414, IMR4350, W760, and RL22.

What would be the best combo to start load development with?

I'm pretty sure there are a few guys here that can help you out with that!

I'm a huge fan of the 270 WSM! What are you planning on hunting with it?

I'm running 130 grain E-Tips in mine. The bullets are tough enough to take down moose. I don't believe they'd have much problem with a whitetail or with penetrating a hog.

I've loaded for the 270WSM since dies were first available for purchase. Magpro is my favorite, but there aren't any really bad powders for the 270WSM in the W760-IMR7828 burn rate. R-22 would be the one to start with from the list you have given. H1000 is the one powder on your list that I have not worked with in this cartridge.

I have laods for the 130ET and 140AB.

130ET:
Win nickle brass at 2.09"
60.5gn of IMR 4350
GM215M Primer
COL 2.880"
Avg Vel - 3340 fps

140AB (Primary bullet):
Win nickle brass at 2.09"
GM215M Primer
61.5gn of RL-19
COL 2.875"
Avg Vel - 3018 (a little slow for a WSM, but it's accurate so I didn't pursue anything else)

I took the IMR4350 route with 64.5 grs. (HOT LOAD) 130 gr. Nos A/B Fed 215 Primers for 3337 fps. COAL 2.90 WW brass CL 2.1" Worked well and was about 1". I didn't go for all out accuracy because I didn't want to go past about 300 yards with a 130 gr. , even with an A/B.

It looks like I'll go the IMR4350 route. I'll post data and pics when I go to the range.

Thanks guys!

Honestly all I did with the several I owned was to obtain some 140 accubonds some RL22 reach 3200 fps and sub MOA (easy task) and call it a day.

Come to think of it I did the same with My 270 Bee, but she is doing 3285 fps. Same thing basically.

I have two 270WSM rifles....both shoot 140gr Accubonds. One loves 69.0gr Retumbo with 215 Mag primers, the other prefers 71.0gr COMPRESSED LOAD.

LOVE the caliber and bullet combo for big game in Alberta

Same as Fotis here. I have to be totally honest though, I really love the 270WSM. Out of all my different cartridges and rifles, my M70 270WSM is a sure thing for me. I started out shooting Winchester Supreme 140 AB's in it, since I was restricted to factory ammo at the time. Those shot unreal, but so did the plain old 150gr PP's and the 130gr BST's.. Everything shot under an inch with ease.

Once I started loading for the rifle, I used 130gr IB's and was astounded to be in the mid 3300's with ease and again, accuracy is excellent. I kinda had a hard time getting Magpro and moved to 150gr BT's and PT's with RL22 and have not been let down at all. They run just over 3100 and give me excellent accuracy. I have taken elk, bear and deer with the 140gr AB's and they did fine. I stepped up to 150gr PT's and BT's for deer. Both shoot to the same POI out to 300, so I have kinda left it alone. I really think the 150gr PT at 3100 is a sure bet for about any animal I would hunt. Wouldn't want to tackle big brown bears with it, but I would smack any moose, elk or whatever with it and be totally happy.

Give RL22 a try with either the 130, 140 or 150 of your choice, I would bet you won't be disapointed in the least. It is fast and accurate. Scotty

Superb grouping, Scotty. It performs about like one would expect a 270 WSM to perform.

Thank you Sir! I do like that 270WSM a bunch. It will be tough to leave it behind. It is my go to rifle for alot of hunting. Scotty

Scotty,

Are you seating to mag length or SAAMI max length?

Both loads are at 2.860". Never found the 270WSM to be really picky. I have more room, but decided to started out at SAAMI and it has worked for me. The 7WSM is loaded out to 2.955" and shoots about the same. If I were you, I would start out at mag length and work back if needed, but I doubt you will have much trouble finding what you want between SAAMI and Mag length. Scotty

In my rifle, not enough velocity and accuracy was less than what was observed with other propellants.
