Just for grins...where would one start to get "optimum" results ( hopefully 2400fps) results with this bullet in a 24 inch barrel, straight 338/06 (necked up Winchester brass) ??? I'm leaning toward Big Game for powder, think I can get more in a cramped space! Should make a heck of a 25-250yd elk load!

In my experience with Hammers, the faster the better. Both in accuracy and expansion. They don’t work like lead core bullets. That 282gr may be a bit too much bullet in 338-06. I use the 186gr Shock Hammer in my 338 Federal. 2750 is reasonable in it and extremely accurate. Close to .338-06 in velocity. I expect it would be an awesome combination.

Thanks guys. I have a sample pack of these 282s, never tried them in my last 338WM. I'm going to get a 338/06 barrel later on for this old Savage '06. I will more than likely just sticK with 200-210gr bullets in it. Thanks again though!

Two bullets that performed excellent in 338-06
Reloader 17 and 225gr Hornady SP and 210gr Nosler Part in WW brass with Fed 210M and before Reloader 17 it was IMR 4320 I used .

I agree that it's a little too much bullet for the 338-06. A 210 gr PT would be about perfect.

JD338

In my 338-06, I am getting the following results:
Wby factory ammo w/ 210 gr Partition: 2750 fps and 1/2" groups @ 100 yards
62.0 gr of H-414 w/ 215 gr SGK @ 2751 fps and 1/2" groups @ 100 yards

Have some of the Nosler 225 gr AB ammunition, but haven't tried it yet in my rifle
(custom Rem 700 LH w/ 22" King Barrel glass and pillar bedded in a Wenig Nutmeg laminated stock and Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36 B&C scope in QR rings and bases).

I have some of the old original 200 NBT (uncoated version) and the Speer 200 HC. I'm trying to scrounge up a box of the Nosler 210PT. Thanks for the recipes guys and Happy New Year! ( 2023 has GOT to be better than 2022!) ha

How about another favor, Dr Mike? What does quickload say ( if anything) about the above same specs but with the old Speer 275? And does anyone know if it will open up out to 200yds, say?

Thank you sir! Looks like I could get 2400 in my 22" barrel with several powders. Man, wouldn't that be a thumper in the dark timber? ha

I have some of the old original 200 NBT (uncoated version) and the Speer 200 HC. I'm trying to scrounge up a box of the Nosler 210PT. Thanks for the recipes guys and Happy New Year! ( 2023 has GOT to be better than 2022!) ha
Well, update; 2023 has sucked big time, ha! Skipping the surgeries, health scare's, etc. : Sold the ugly Savage, bought a new Ruger All Weather, 338WM but it felt too heavy between my hands, a tad "clubby". I sold it and two nice Glocks locally and bought a like new Wby ULwt 338-06 A Square. 24" I found on Gun Broker. I had a TT Special put in, I put my new Leupold 2.5x8 on in Talley rings, empty rig weighs 6 3/4 lbs! Yeah. has a brake that is really not bad for noise, works great for recoil. (Much easier on my old Oilfield Worker shoulder!) It either came from factory with a Decelerator Pad or owner added it. So far I have the 175HH Hammers clustering with 58gr IMR 3031 at 35 deg. I also got the 200 NBT/Varget /56gr wadding them in, both in Winchester cases. I have some Nosler 210 and Barnes 210 TTSX to try out, plus some Speer 200 and 225 BT to play with. My hunting style is either up close ( 100 and under in Timber/ Aspens) or mid range cow out in the open, not over 250 usually. I have taken game out to 370 or so, but I'm not comfortable doing that. I put a limit right at 300yds on myself. Which bullet do you guys think would give the best bone breaking penetrating on elk in Timber ( bad angle shots)??

That's what I was thinking Doc. Heck, I even have some older Grand Slam 250s I could get or get close to 2400, that would thump in the thickets! :)

I have some Nosler 210 and Barnes 210 TTSX to try out
What a coincidence I have those 2 bullets to try out in my 338 WM.

I’ve not had much luck with the 250gr GS in it yet.
Getting my 338 WM up and running is a project next year. So far I have 25 rounds through it.

I've used the 210 TTSX "forerunner", the Barnes 210 XBT back in '98, it was in the 340 Wby. I got an honest 3200 up here. I took a zebra, blesbuk, Impala and a big Namibian Gemsbuk, easy cheezy. The rifle itself was just too light and it blew out two scopes. In late '99, I had that same rifle rebarreled to 338WM with a bit heavier barrel, Mag Na Ported, and only shot the Barnes 185 XLC, took a nice cow right at 250yds. Love the Barnes, for sure. I've killed more deer/antelope Stateside (30 cal/7mm/6.5, 6mm) with Nosler's and Hornady's than about any other. I really like the big round nose Woodleighs, but now even Huntingtons (who I got mine from) has closed it's doors. Bummer.

I wouldn't hesitate to go with the old reliable 210 gr Partition at 2750 fps. This was Wby's spec using the s for their factory load. I have had good success with it over the years in the 338 Win Mag.

I recently read an interesting account by an African hunter/writer with years of experience with various 338 cartridges on a wide variety of game there.
His conclusion was that despite velocity, the best on game performance came from the middle weights in this caliber, regardless of the size of their game, from the tiny antelopes all the way up to Cape buffalo. While many like the SD and mass of the 250s in the 338, his experience found that they did not penetrate any further or kill any quicker than the 200-225 gr bullets, when using Partitions, A-Frames, Fail Safes, Sciroccos, Grand Slams or TSX/TTSX bullets. And the additional velocity that the middleweights gave over the heavies was significant enough to allow tricky follow up shots out to 300 yards or further on wounded game. He also commented about its favourable performance even compared to the 375 H&H and the use of it on the same game with 270 and 300 gr bullets.
This may be one man's opinion, but when it comes from a man that has shot and hunted a lot more game than I may in a few lifetimes, and his knowledge and study of ballistics leads me to believe that his credibility is to be well deserved.
I found this interesting after the years of reading about the penetration qualities of bullets with SDs of .300 or more, including 250 gr 338 bullets being used on dangerous game.

So far I have liked the 210 gr Partition in the 338 Federal, 338-06 and the 338 Win Mag.
And the 215 gr SGK in the 338-06, and the 200 gr Uni-Cor in the 338 Federal.
I am hoping that I have as much success with the 200 gr AccuBond in the 338 Federal and 225 gr AccuBond in the 338-06 as I have with that bullet in all of the other cartridges I have used it. (Both in accuracy and on-game performance)

FWIW, I used the 210 gr PT at 3200 fps in the 338 RUM to take a bull elk at 350 yards through both shoulders. He was DRT with a golf ball size exit wound. It's a great bullet.

Thanks guys! I am going to try some R16 with the 210 TTSX, was thinking of Varget ( I got such great results with it and the 200NBT at 56gr) for the 210 NP. I used Winchester cases for the NBT load, but will use the Lapua with the NP. I sure enjoyed the 340Wby I took to S.A./Namibia for the longer shots ( I took most all the game at 350 to 375+) but the scope blew and I finished the hunt with my buddie's 300WM/180 XBT I had given him. I have yet to try it out to 300, but that 175 Hammer over 58/3031 is running right with a good 300 Mag load, but I get it with less powder, a lighter rifle, less blast, even with its brake. I'm starting to like this set-up! Now, that was my "goal" in having that MG Arms 5 1/2 pound (before scope/mounts/loaded) 340Wby/210XBT made up for the '98 trip. Fast, flat, hit hard (even up close) I just wasn't counting on the muzzle brake working so well ( for recoil, yes, for noise it was "God-Awful"!) and acting like the reverse forces an air piston in a pellet rifle has. It blew a Leupold 2.5x8 10 days before we left, so I put a Zeiss Conquest on it. I had to readjust it twice and recover a couple wounded animals because the zero was off. I didn't take a spare scope as there were three of us with four rifles. But...it felt good in your hands! This little Gem feels just right, and no way this '06 based round is giving me trouble! :) IF my MGA 340 had "worked out", I would still be using it! I love all the big magnums, its the heavier rifles I detest. I grew up with a Model 94, ha, I suppose a light rifle "ruint me" for a hunting rifle! ha

The rifle hated R16 with the 210TTSX! Boo, Hiss! I have my 175HH/3031 load, and a good one with the 200 NBT and Varget , but I wanted to use this 210 TTSX as my "heavy", for now. I went with the Lapua cases, CCI 250 and Big Game. I started at 58 and went slowly up to 62. 61-62 were slightly compressed, but thats why God had LEE make their Crimp Die...I'm pretty sure??? :) Anyhow. my groups stayed right at 2" until 61 which gave a nice 3 shot triangle right at 3/4" but the 62 was closer to my 175 zero and it too was a nice triangle a tad under an inch. Bolt lift was easy, etc. seemed "moderate" to me and my 46yrs of Handloading. So I'm stopping there, no more bullets other than those three makes/weights for me....at least right now.....:)
