I recently purchased a 338-06 Whitworth mauser custom. It has a 23" douglas tube. I was going to purchase some factory ammo to start, and work into handloads. What have you guys had luck with in this caliber for bullets, powder, primers ect. Also what are some recommendations on factory ammo. Thanks in advance from a new member!

Welcome to the forum!

Let me know what bullet weight you want.

My favorite load

210 gr Nosler Part
IMR 4320 @ 56.0
Fed 210 M
WW Cases

Well, I haven't fully decided on a bullet yet. I've been thinking about the 210 and 225 grain Partition. I'll be using the rifle for whitetails and black bear. I don't typically shoot long ranges when I hunt whitetails either. I'd just like a load accurate, and reliable.

The 210gr Nosler part is what I used for Moose, elk and bear.
Perhaps the best all around bullet.

I suggest to get the best performance from the 06 based case is to use 200gr to 215gr bullets. Anything hevier and you are taking up powder space.

Two good bullets come to mind the 215gr Sierra GK and the 200gr Nosler AccuBond. I tried Reloader 15 powder which was good but IMR 4320 just a tad better.

Just for deer and Black bear.....the 200gr AccuBond or Nosler Bat. Tip would be excellent.

Suggest starting at 52.0 with IMR 4320

My rifle likes 54.0 with the 200 BT or 210 Part

Highly suggest WW Cases from 30-06 and Fed 210 Match primers.

If Deer and Black Bear are on menu I suggest the 200gr BT or AccuBond.

I have made several mounts using the 200gr BT with this load.
I have not used the 200gr Silvertip BST in the 338-06, but have had excellent results with the BST in 270 and 30-06.
