45/70 GOVT first attempt

Thanks Jim. I looked at a 1.5x5 Vari X III on a Whitworth 458 Lott today and it was a pretty clear scope and seemed to have a ton of eye relief. Scotty

I have that exact same scope on my BLR/358 Win and while it seems like a great scope, I don't want another one. I have eyeballed the 2x7 Redfield, and that seems like another great scope, I kind of have been really looking at the VX3 1.5x5. I think that would be an excellent scope for the Marlin. Thanks for the heads up Fotis. Scotty

That would be the ultimate for that gun. I have the 1.75x6x32mm on my #1 458 Lott.

Also do not discount the 1-4 leupy! Nice inexpensive (for a leupy) scope.

Pop,

I am kinda thinking about the VX3 1.75x6x32mm.
It would work well for the 1895 Guide gun.

Scotty, it will do the job for sure. You more than likely will never see one of those bullets after shooting a deer or black bear unless you find it in some tree or mound of dirt behind them :)

JD Wonderful scope on my 458 Lott!!!!!!!!!

even with 15 gr of unique with 300 gr cast bullets at 1200 fps. It will withstand that kind of recoil!!!!!!!!!

JD, The Leupold is the best scope built to take punishment for the money.

Okay, you guys are going to probably think this crazy, and Pop, I eat crow on the 2x7 you mentioned earlier. Today while I was thumbing through a Cabelas, I saw this scope and thought, with a 45-70, it would likely be pretty close to one of the slug gun/muzzloader settings. I don't have to buy it, but I did order it from the PX and since it wasn't a special order, I don't have to take it, but I kinda think it may be a nice scope. It has 2X on the low end and plenty on the high side. If this one doesn't look like something I want, I am not stuck with it, but I kinda like the B&C reticule in my 2.5x8 VX3 and this seems like the same thing for a 45-70 ballistics. I have really gotten to like the simpler Ballistic reticules out there, like the Leupold B&C and the Burris LR styles. They are very easy to shoot at distances, and work pretty well for me, on hunting type targets. I also ordered Leupold Low Matte QR Weaver rings. Should make for a nice tight package no matter what scope I put on the rifle. Thanks for all the advice on this. I should be able to see it in a day or two. Scotty

Very good choice of scope. I am putting a VX-II 2-7x33mm on my 260 Rem

I am not crazy about the accutrac on the Ultimate but I do like the 2-7x33mm. Mine does not have the accutrac B&C

I have a VXII on my wifes 308 Hawkeye and my sons 243. They are great scopes for the money. I figured this scope would work just as well, if not better. If I had it to do over again, I would have gotten the LR reticule for all of my scopes. They are pretty good for hunting purposes. Scotty

I just realized after sizing my cases, they mouths are not quite square. Well, I went to put them into my case trimmer (older RCBS rotary) and I don't have the right collet. I guess I need collet #4? Man, this whole 45-70 thing is really throwing my dope off! Guess I need to get with the program. I had to make a new loading block today just to hold the cases. Scotty

You are breaking my heart    Hey, that is the fun of reloading, all the things you run into.

I know. This 45-70 loading is a first for me in almost 20 years of doing it. I guess I will continue to accumulate equipment! Just when I think I have all I need, I always run into one more gizmo, ring, bushing, whatever! Your right though, I like loading, but man, I can't wait to touch a few more off! Scotty

Scotty,

You should be able to use your reloading block that is used for the 270 WSM for your 45-70. It'll work.

I had one RCBS loading block and it worked for the 270WSM and all my other cases. I couldn't begin to stuff the 45-70 cases in there. No big deal, just made one outta a wood block. Seemed to work ok. I measured the block at .560 and the 45-70 measures about .605 at the rim. Scotty
