Caught Yet "Another" Great Deal!

I asked my Smith to order me a Rife Basix trigger for this VanGuard (Howa) They have been good triggers for me in several makes. Usually, Rugers and Mausers.
I have used Timney, Rifle Basix and another brand I can’t recall on Vanguards. I still have them all.
My favorite remains the Timney, as it’s the only one that keeps (or adds) the 3 position safety.

180 TTSX or 180 Hammer Hunter with 7828SSC works great.

Thanks Doc! I have some 168 TTSX on hand, but thought I would start out with some 150 Sierra PH I have, for coyotes/plinking rocks out in the desert. See if this rifle wants to shoot. If the rifle shows promise, I'll step up to Barnes or Hammers.

I'm going to wait until after my cow hunt to mess with it very much. I hope to learn alot about the 300 wby, never owned one! I have used the 300 WSM, the 300 WM (have shot the majority of my big animals with it an monos) and the 300 RUM. The RUM, while great, I didn't hang on to as I am not a LR Hunter and it seemed like "alot of sugar for a dime", ha. By that, I used a 150 Boutique "supposedly bonded" bullet at 60yds on a 3x3 Muley. almost cut him half! ha I presented my Marine SIL with a custom 300 RUM upon his 2006 return from the sandbox. I loaded up the 200 NAB and he put a Husqemah 6.5x20 on it! I have access to it if I need LR. Admittedly though, I'm excited about this Wby. If I end up liking the cartridge I can teak this one or go with a semi custom. Jazzed!

The little draw back to the 300 Wby in the Vanguard is mag length. Other than that it’s an outstanding cartridge.

I usually seat the Barnes and the Hammers at the top groove anyhow. Great accuracy and plenty fast. Although, if I end up wanting to shoot one alot I would probably hunt down a Model 700 Classic in 300 Wby. 1. I really like the Classic. 2. Can put a Trigger Tech on it. 3. Heavy enough to shoot well but light enough for General elk hunting. Since I'm not a LR Hunter I doubt I would even try anything over 180gr. Plenty of room in the Remington. Now, I do understand guys that want 4" of room, for those 230+ , but don't need to shoot them as I average about 190yds on elk, ha. I just can't make myself go back to a levergun in 45-70 though! I feel as sure as I do, there it will be around 350-400yds! Arrrgh! ha, plus, so far, no Grizzlys here in Utah! :)

Took the 338 RPM with the factory 185 TTSX load cow elk hunting. Last Sunday AM (hey, I "normally work" every Sunday, I can take one off! ha) Anyhow, we got into them and at 160yds, my first shot went almost too high. She went about 90yds and lay down. I jumped her up and around 50yds away gave her a raking shot. She went another 40yds and lay back down. Head shot finished her. Big old cow, probably close to around 500#. Can't seem to get my computer to take my phone pics! Rifle was almost too light for me to hold still. I had to really hold it tight to settle down the crosshairs. Fine Mountain rifle, a Sporter Weight would be easier. There is still next year! Meanwhile, the Vanguard is getting the fixings. We shall see. :)

Thanks guys! Me and the Lord have been Hunting/shooting buddies as far back as I can remember! ha As long as I keep Mt 6:33 before me, I get a little time off now and then! lol I have a great Assoc Pastor and another Ministry friend (traveling minister) who cover for me.

Speaking of which...I saw another deal in the paper, so cancelled the work on the Vanguard, picked it up from the Smith and sold it ,sans mounts/scope. Put a bit of money with that proceed and bought an older , 24" Mod 700 BDL in 300Wby. Older gent having health issues wanted to sell off his elk hunting rig. He had it Parkerized, glass bedded/floated. Had only been shot 28 rds, and I got the empties, Remingtons! The Walker trigger had been lightened to about 3.5#. Leupold 1 pc Base/rings had been Parkerized too. Took it to my original Smith to have a TT Special (which I really prefer) put in, and have his 3 port brake added. Should be ready right after Christmas. This will give me a Magnum Sporter weight rifle for the Prairie or for the type of hunt I just finished. I'm going to shoot the 154 HHT (Hammer) out of it. No use getting beat up about it, ha.

Its a three port, wide, perpendicular holes i.e. like an arty brake. I've used them for decades, very efficient and "quiet" if you are doing the shooting! ha

Just a little advice while it's at the smith I would have a new recoil pad installed also since the factor Rem pad can be hard as a brick. That 35 Whelen Classic I sold you brought tears to my eyes the first time I shot it before I changed the pad, that 300Wby will make your eyes cross.

I agree with Roger. Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad is definitely the way to go.

If I change pads on a rifle, the decelerator is the only way to fly. I have two rifles that came with Limbsavers that have turned to a disgusting goo. I won't ever consider one, even as a temporary fix.

Fortunately, he had just recently put a new Decelerator on it! I like that brand, plus LimbSavers too. Remington's stock design actually fits me very well as far as handling recoil. The wrist could be more Open, as I have big hands, but its OK. If I do stick with the 155 Scenar-L and 154 HHT, the thing should be a kitten!
