IN MARCH - 340 Weatherby Magnum

Man, that sounds like it is going to be a monster of a rifle! I guess you have been bitten by the 338 bug. That 2.5x8 VXIII is a great scope and with the B&C reticle is very accurate. Can't wait to hear what you do with that rifle.

POP, that sounds like a military secret you are building. I can't imagine it is going to be anything less that awesome with all of the resources you are throwing at it! Scotty

If it were a military secret, we'd all know what his new project is.

I am not coming back to this thread!!!!!!! I just can not stand the suspense!!!!!! IT IS TO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!        :?: :?: :?: :?:

Hey, I am back

JD, there is no ballistic difference between the 340Wby and the 338Rum. In fact Nosler loads a faster 225gr load for the 340Wby than the 338Rum. If you buy Weatherby ammo for the 340Wby whether the 210gr Par which moves a 3211fps the 225gr 3066fps or the 250gr at 2966 I actually out preform the 338Rum even if one handloads or buys Federal or Nosler ammo for the 338Rum. On top of all of that I get basically the same as the 338Rum with less recoil due to the fact that the 338Rum uses more powder to accomplish basically the same. :?: :?: :?:

Mike,

They are very similar.
I have pushed the 210 gr PT to 3240 fps and the 250 gr PT to 3024 fps. YMMV.
Thats why I said its almost a RUM. :p

Yeah, I know, new I could get you off the couch and up from watching tv. I have noticed some hand loads that exceed factory ammo. Why do you choose the 250gr AccuBond over the 210gr Partition? You must be doing some long range shooting on game.

The rum has more capacity so given the same max pressures the Rum will exceed the Bee. Would any game notice?

I hate to live on the difference. :p :p :p :p :p :p :p

Yes, not much difference. I ask JD why he chose the 250gr AccuBond over the 210gr Partition. He must be doing some real long range shooting on game.

What's the point of either caliber if you're not looking to use it at long range? Higher BC and SD would be my guess. What you say JD?

Yote hit it. Long range shooting. The 250 gr AB has a BC of .575. Make for a nice long range hammer.

BTW, I am deep frying a turkey.....in a snow storm.

A 210gr Patition at 3200fps plus is over 4800ft ponuds of energy and 450yd shot is very do able with out moving up on clicks.

Hey, that is cool, sounds good and they taste good deep fried. Making me hungry.

Yes the .575 BC does make a difference. What velocities are you pushing them at and what is your zero?

Mike,

My load, which is the only charge weight I tried, is 98.6 grs Retumbo.
It shoots under .5" so I just left it alone. MV is 2950 fps. Max is around 101.0 grs Retumbo but I never bothered going up.

My zero is 200 yds.
100 yds +1.5
200 yds 0.0
300 yds -6.6 2+0 MOA
400 yds -18.8 4+2 MOA
500 yds -37.6 7+1 MOA
600 yds -63.7 10+1 MOA

JD, Very impressive shooting and Velocities. I really like that. Truly an AT&T rig - REACH OUT AND TOUCHEM :)

I chrono'd a 338/378 wby with 225 grain factory loads that went a touch over 3000 fps in a Mark V. My 340 went 3100 with 225's, maybe that's why it kicked so bad! Used 8mm Rem Mag brass just run through the die and trimmed, no pressure signs at all and great groups. Kicked so bad it was ruining my eyes. (detached retina) The guy I sold it to finally put a brake on it because it was smacking him between the eyes. The guy is a friend of mine and still has the gun. (He wouldn't sell it for any price!) For some reason the Ultra Mags I've shot don't kick as bad as the Wby's.????
