Me and my buddy decided to get in the last day of the season and fill a doe tag. Got to the farm and the creek was up to much to cross in the truck. This isn’t our first rodeo, we keep a junky old 10’ Jon boat there just for this reason. The cows had our launch site a soupy muddy mess, sank up to our knees in mud, creek water and cow sh*t. Got the boat launched but the creek was ripping more than we thought so with only a single paddle to row with we ended up about 150 yards downstream of our intended landing site. We tried to scramble up the steep bank but spent most of the time slipping and falling back. Finally just waded the shallows against the bank until we found a spot to get up the bank. Now muddy and wet we went to our hunting spots. Didn’t see so much as a songbird. And being wet about froze. Now just reverse the previous adventure getting across this time to get back. I managed to face plant and drive the muzzle of my rifle on the mud. I neglected to bring shoes and my buddy made it very clear my mud and dung caked boots where not going in his new truck. So me and my soggy socks rode upfront. On the way home we were lamenting on what a crap day it was, but now that I’m home, showered and warm I have fond memories of the day.

Yep, that's hunting. One thing about hunting here in the Great White North, very few creeks running bank full and little mud or whatever to contend with at this late date in the season. I'm glad you have the memories. Most of my memories are pretty precious, and I don't actually remember a bad day afield.

And as luck would have it the game warden would show up with a ticket for consuming an unregistered deer.
only if he got a helicopter, or swift boat ;) .The warden has been hanging out there, the landowner told us that a neighbor witnessed someone stop on the gravel road, shoot a deer in his pasture, open his gate, crossed the creek and drove into his pasture to get the deer, left the gate open and cows got out.....In WV we check deer via the internet on the phone, Mine is usually checked before I get it back to the truck. Va has an app you don't need to carry a paper license. You open the app and a warden scans your QR code and all your info shows up on his device. What I like is I can also attach my grandsons license to my account so everybody's info is there. Anything works for a carcass tag so long as it has your name, address, county and time of kill. When you check it on the app you get a confirmation code to write on the carcass tag.

I don't miss having to haul the carcass to a check in station then home and start skinning and cutting. Dan.
