Awhile ago, I bought a Pre 64 Model 70, standard weight in .270. It had the original open sights and is all original. I recently ordered a match grade Kreiger barrel for it which comes in June 18. I have been wanting to shoot it with a scope on to see the before groups so I can see how much better it will shoot with a new Kreiger barrel. I recently found a used Leupold M8 3x scope at a pawn shop for $75 and threw it on to see how it shot (the best I could get with open sights was 2" at 100 yards.

I was using factory Remington 130 Grain Core Lokt ammo. I was going to start to develop loads after the new barrel is installed. After getting it on paper (25 yards) and sighted in at 100 yards, the first group was 1.08". The second group was .598". I then shot a 4th shot on this group. If you measured the last 3 shots of these 4 total shots, the group size was .1605". I couldn't believe it. I expected 2"-3". I guess I can cancel my order for the Kreiger barrel and am going to go buy 5-10 boxes of factory Remington 130 grain Core-Lokt because it obviously loves them.

Pull a corelokt bullet and also measure it's velocity and try to copy it with your handloads.

Also measure the powder. You may find a powder that you can get close with, but I doubt you'll get better in your case.

Todd, first off, beautiful Pre64 buddy! I love them.

Yeah, it looks like your barrel is just fine for hunting to me. So glad you gave it another chance before rebarreling.

Also, great bullet test. Looks like that CoreLokt is very solid in the 270 Win load. Bet it's pretty fast as well. Great day. That looks very classy with that 3x Leupold too. That was a steal at 75.00.

Wow! Talk about a delightful find! You've done well. Great report and excellent pictures to give a sense of what you're doing. Superb bullet test, as well.

Yeah Todd, I had to get home and check out your pictures, full sized on my laptop. That rifle is excellent though. Very nice!

That bullet looks excellent. Nothing to complain about there at all. A Pre64 270 Win would be a welcome addition in my safe. Especially one that shoots like that.. I am so glad it was redeemed and it didn't cost you a barrel. Seems the more I learn about the Pre64 cut rifled barrels, the more I like them.

I took my 338 Win Mag out today, just to shoot it a few times. I fired three shots at 100, had the first one out an 1" and low (fouler shot from a clean bore). Next two stacked right on top one another right on point. Talk about a confidence builder..

Todd

Beautiful rifle. The Leopold M8 3x scope gives it a nice classic look.
She is a shooter for sure. Excellent shooting.
Nothing wrong with the 130 gr PSPCL either!

JD338

A very large pile of deer has been taken with that combo. The retro Leupy on top fits the whole scene too. Great shooting with a 3x too!

Great pictures and write up. !!!!
I am not sure that a new barrel would improve the accuracy, that much. ?

Great idea...I will do it! Wish I had a chrono but I don't. Remington advertises those bullets at 3,050 I believe, and this has a 24" barrel so I think that should be close.

Thanks! I thought it was a steal as well. The salesman said he thought it might be only tough enough for a rimfire, but I read an old article by David Petzal saying they were pretty popular for dangerous game rifles because they were so simple and rugged. Sometimes I get lucky but not often!

I would bet your doing close to that.. Most 270 stuff is pretty close to advertised, at least in a 24" tube.

It's a M70 Alaskan.. Wife got it for me for our 10 year anniversary. I love the CRAP outta that rifle.

It has given me the urge to add a 270/308/30-06 though...

Wow that is beautiful! Your wife is officially nominated for wife of the year! That is awesome! Nice boxers as well. I love that breed!

Thank you very much. The rifle was the handiwork of my Wife and Mason P at Nosler taking care of me. She hit it out of the park with the 338. It is a great shooting rifle. I still wanna get the trigger tuned up by a good smith, but it has a place in my hands for a long time to come. I am working on putting a Swaro on it, to complete the package. Has a 2-10 Minox right now, and a Swaro would be awesome, but I imagine I would never go hungry with a 3 or 4X Leupold on it either.

The boxers are awesome. Matter of fact, they are laying right on me right now. Great dogs, awesome family pets.
