Testing the new 200 gr Accubond in my Whelen

I like my 30-06 a whole lot but who needs that when I could get a 200 AB going almost 2900 fps?
That my friend would be likened to a snow plow hitting a Deer at a high rate of speed.

Just to note here I'm not knocking the 30-06 either, I'm just a lover of the Whelen and the .358 family of Cartridges. My dad has always stated there is nothing like the 35 Cal. it carries a lot of energy and wallop.

Don

Same here Don, I like all of the 35's really. the 35 Rem is a super woods rifle, the 358 has a little more legs and the Whelen really takes the place of a 338WM for the most part. Granted, I like the 338 alot as well, but the Whelen does everything it does, in my mind.

Scotty,

I've got a Rem Model 14 Pump that is fun to shoot. Handed down from my Father-In Law afer he passed away. Talk about history. 8) Getting my Dad's 35 Whelen just put icing on the cake.

I would tend to think the Whelen should be less expensive on the wallet than the 338 WM with ammo. The recoil is less as well.

And a lump in my throat. I'm sentimental that way.

That's what we love about you Mike. Do I need to get you a tissue? If so I'll get one out in the mail today.

Good call Dave. I knew Mike was from Canada but did not realize it was BC. Do you think the US would let me come back?

I dunno'. I may be considered subversive by Homeland Security. I do own a Whelen.

Bill,

Nothing wrong with the 350 Rem Mag BUT the 35 Whelen is smooth as butter when you chamber a round.

You have to like the loyalty the 35 Whelen is just a fine cartridge for here in North America.
I wouldn't be afraid of anything in the wild with a 35 Whelen that shot the 200s to 250s well

Dan

SCOTTY, there is no place here for a dirty mouth like that! You keep the 338 WM out of this!

HA! I can tell you this though, if I had of had the Whelen before the 338WM, it is unlikely I would have ever gotten the 338! I do like them both, but the Whelen is such a good cartridge for elk and such if you aren't trying to reach out past 500. Which, I don't really do. Plus, my Whelen doesn't weigh much either, so it seems to get carried all the time.

The bigger 338's really make the 250 and heavier bullets shine though. So, you know where my heads at!

Scotty,
I'm with you on the weight difference in rifles. There is quite a difference between my 300 RUM and the 35 Whelen too. Often thought about taking the Whelen along to Colorado at times. Maybe I will this year if I can get a Cow tag off the Leftover List when it's made available. Probably will take both rifles.

Don

Don, I don't think you would be sorry taking the 35 whelen as long as you know its limits on distance. It is a hammer as my friend Scott tells me :)

I think the only thing that limits range for must of us with the Whelen is us! With a good scope like a CDS or equivalent, I know most all of us would be very surprised at the ease of hitting targets further than the "woods ranges" that the Whelen is pushed in to. Not saying it is a 270 or nothing, but in todays hunting fields, if you have a range finder and a decent range card, the Whelen won't leave much on the table.

Scotty and Sask,
I agree very good points. It's difficult for me to think of loading and going to the range with the extreme heat we are having. Last week it hit 109F in Nashville with Friday and Saturday being 107F.
I measured 106F in the shade on Friday. Think I'll wait a while.
