What cheaper bullet?

I know the saying, "you get what you pay for". I asked about cheaper bullets to practice with the .338WM. All I am asking for from this bullet is to put holes in paper and maybe shoot a deer or two. Of the "cheaper" bullets out there what would you get? I am looking at the SST or Interlock in 200gr to practice with and use the 210 PT for the hunt. Any others out there that I should look at?

I wouldn't hesitate to get any heads from Hornady. They are very well made and reasonablly priced. I would also suggest you check out www.shootersproshop.com for some blemished Noslers. This is a site Nosler runs and sells over runs and blemished (only defects are in appearance - not as shiny and no physical defects at all) heads. You can get great deals and they shoot exactly the same as the first grade ones you pay a lot more for.

I use the Interlock for load testing on a variety of rifles. They are good bullets that perform as they are supposed to. Chris' suggestion of checking SPS is also a fine suggestion that merits serious consideration.

6mm, I just looked and do not see any. I was hoping to load some up in the near future. I will keep looking.

I have more Hornady and Speer than anything else for general shooting. Used to get a lot of Speer seconds, I don't even know if they are available now?

Nosler has stopped making the 200 grain Ballistic Tips but they still make the Combined Technologies Ballistic Silver Tip. The only difference as per Nosler is the Combined Technologies Ballistic Silver Tips have a Lubalux (not sure I spelled that right) coating and a greyish silver tip. I've had to switch over to the Combined Technologies Ballistic Silver Tips and they shoot exactly the same as the discontinued Ballistic Tips. I haven't seen the Ballistic Silver Tips on there in a while. Also they don't sell any other brand heads. Once in a while you can find Nosler and Winchester brass on there also.

Sometimes Nosler has their facry production over-runs on sale on the shootersproshop.com site. There is no way to tell what is going to be there, so from .204s to .338s and maybe even larger bullets, there is a decent chance of getting something you'll use.

I got some .30-caliber 180gn Partion over-runs for half of what they would have cost in probably any retail store.

Elkman, where were you getting the Speer seconds?
We were getting them form Lolo Sporting Goods in Lewiston Idaho. They came packaged by weight in small paper bags. That was a while ago, I am not even sure they are still in business.

You might even consider using these the interlocks full time if they group better than the partitions. Best "non premium" bullets around IMO.

So would you buy the 200 or 225 grain bullets?

If you were asking me I would get the 200's as they should be inline with your 210's. In all fairness I am a 225 or 250 guy in the 338 calibers. For what it's worth I have found that Interlocks shoot very well.

Hornady has a little 200 grain SST that might be Whitetail magic in your 338. I can't see you not throwing a heaping of hurt on deer or black bear with that bullet.

Keep your eyes on the Pro Shop throughout the year and buy when they are there, when you see them, they usually don't last long. I can usually buy enough of the PT, BT's and AB's to keep me stocked up so I don't need to shoot other bullets and it winds up about the same price as if I were buying Hornady or Sierra. I think I just paid 17.00 for 250 grain PT's.. Take a look at what they sell for retail and you can start to see the savings if you buy in bulk.
