I'm getting ready to start finding a load for a Swift. I would be much obliged if anyone is willing to share their load suggestions. I'm particularly interested in the powder you used, and what bullet wghts worked best for you. I don't have much experience loading varmint cartridges.

Thanks for your help.

Steve

RL15 works great as does H4895.

What weight bullet?

Thanks POP!

The loads will be used mostly for coyote hunting. I was thinking about a 50 or 55 gr. Ballistic Tip. What do you recommend?

Steve

Here is a load for the 50 grain, starting load is 42.8 grains of ACCUR 2700 and that should put you around 3847 fps and the max load is 45 grains and that should put you around 4035 fps. Here is the load for the 55 grain, starting load is 39.6 grains of A-XMR-4350 that should put you around 3541 fps and the max load is 44 grains and that should put you around 3896 fps. And if you want a bullet that is really smoking look at the 40 grain bullets. With 42 grains of ACCUR 2520 you should be around 4477 fps.

what works well for my ruger 77 is 35.5 gr IMR 3031 with 55gr bt. I dont remember fps but it is accurate .

Wally, sorry I don't have any specific loads/experience with the Swift, but just wanted to suggest with any of the smaller caliber cartridges, it's a good idea to work up charges in increments of .2 grain rather than .5 or 1 grain with the larger cartridges. I would probably start load testing this cartridge with a 55 b tip and 55 v max and see what works best. Some other good powders to try that haven't been mentioned are H335, Benchmark, RL10, and W748.

Yotesmoker,

Thanks for the suggestion on working up a load. All of the cartridges I have worked with I use .5 to 1 gr. steps. I will definitely follow your advice.

Thanks a bunch,

Steve

I guess bullet selection would be dependent upon your intended use.. if you're not into saving hides and your barrel twist is fast enough the 60gr B-tip would be an awesome choice for the .220.
I can't say I have any experience with the Swift, but use a lot of 55gr B-tips and B-kings out of my 22-250 with Viht N-140 powder.

Powerstroke,
I'm not sure about the twist on this rifle. I will check it out. I also noticed while rummaging through my powder bin, I had an unopened 2 lb. jug of VV-150. I noticed that Nosler also had data for that powder. I'm tempted to add it to the list of things to try.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Steve

Wally

I have no experience with the 220 Swift but I do with the 22-250. The 50 gr BT is very accurate and flat kills coyotes on broadside shots. The coyotes drop in their tracks and exits are usually the size of a dime to nickel. I have had 3 runners with quartering on shots.

I have switched to the 55 gr BT. Only one kill but I dropped it in its tracks. No quartering on shots yet. I did try the 60 gr BT but it won't stabilize in the 1:14 twist. If you have a faster twist, that is the bullet I would use. I have also taken one coyote with the 60 gr PT. The bullet hit the chest and exited between the hams.

Congratulations on your 220 Swift. Let us know how she shoots.

You might want to try the 60 grain bt

Wally,

I'd certianly try the N-150 powerder. I'm a huge Viht fan as most of it I use or tried is extremely stable and clean burning.. ie very consistent.
As JD & POP mentioned... if you happen to have a 1 : 12 twist or faster barrel I'd imagine the 60gr B-tip to be the gold !

JD,

I appreciate you sharing your experience with the 50 gr and 55 gr bullets. It sounds like both will do a good job. It's only a matter of which shoots.

I'm much obliged for your insight.

Steve

POP,

You are the man! Thanks for running the Quikload on the 60 gr BT. I'm going to check my twist, but who knows, it might work anyway. The rifle is a Ruger #1. I haven't been able to find any specs on their website about the twist they used. I will probably have to use a tight patch and a rod to figure it out.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to help.

Steve

Powerstroke,

I've heard nothing but good things about Viht powders. I picked up this jug to try in another rifle, and didn't get around to it. I think this Swift might be a good candidate. If it works, I'll be wanting to try the VV powders in everything else! It also seems you all think a lot of the 60 gr bullet. I'm definitely going to have to see if it will work.

Thanks a bunch for your help.

Steve

Anytime sir!
