Desert Fox won't give me my 338 Lapua Ai back  so, I am thinking of rebarreling my Rem 700 270 to a 330 Dakota.
I have been wanting a 338 but at the same time I am after something a bit different than the standard off the shelf 338's.
I am hoping to keep my standard length action and will probably go with a Krieger barrel.

Any suggestions for an off the wall 338.

old #7,

338 O'Brien

Its a 338-300 RUM (Edge) AI. Pushes a 250 gr PT at 3250 fps with 103.0 grs H1000 from a 26" tube. My gunsmith built one for hogwild here with a Lilja barrel. The first 3 shots fire form brass went .25x" at 100 yards.

The 338 O'Brien will give you some serious horse power.

That sounds like a long range pile driver.
I assume you would neck up 300 rum to 338 and fire form.
Sounds like fun.

338 EDGE is a good one. Requires no fireforming of brass and no special dies that cost you $150+.

I get 2850fps from a 300g SMK and a 28" barrel. 3100fps shouldn't be to much of a problem with the 250g slugs.

250g AB at 3100fps would be a nice LR hammer for deer and elk!!!

Nothing wrong with the 330 Dakota though...

I love my 338 Lapua Ackley Improved so much that I'm planning to built a lighter version of it using the Model 700 Action. My action is already blueprinted and ready to go. I'm waiting for Bartlein to ship my barrel anytime soon.

You are exactly right.

I was just reading about this caliber in my Nosler Reloading Manual #6 last night. Looks impressive. Too bad I already built my 338-06AI on a Sako m75 Greywolf-that I need to reload and get to the range STILL!!!

Swiftly,

Welcome to the forum. The 338 O'Brien is one cool round. 8)

That 338 O'Brien sounds like a good one. I like the EDGE for simplicity though. Seems like the 330 Dakota would be a little spendier due to cases and such, but it is a nice round that sits in the middle of some good company. Man, I don't even want to get into .338 discussions', it is enough to drive me to the poor house. Scotty

338 edge. Simple to make brass and no fireforming needed.

A 338-375 Ruger would not be the horsepower of the afore mentioned 338 edge or O'Brian, but would be a bit more than a 330 Dakota I would think.

Just a thought.

I have shot Remingtonman's 338 edge with the 300 SMKs, and out of a 12.5lb gun with a good break it kicks a fair amount less than my 338 WM. I have also had the priviledge of seeing it in action at 710 yards and it is a HAMMER on elk!

Right after I had my 338-06 Ackley Improved built on a Sako m75 Greywolf rifle, Iwas lookin in the Barnes reloading manual and started reading about the 330 Dakota. I may have to build on now just because on another Sako m75 action with a MacMillan stock.

The .338 Norma magnum have etched a few times. It's been around for years now, and yet we don't hear of it. That cartridge is interesting too.

Has anyone considered the problems converting the 270 with the small bolt face and magazine problems? Or the longer actions required by most of the 338's mentioned?

I have converted/rebarreled a half dozen rifles to different calibers now and the 270 is not a good jumping off point for any 338 other than a 338-06 IME
