35 Newton 225AB RL17

I agree with the low end but I'd rather keep the size as compact as possible. I also cannot get the reticle I want with the 3-18. I don't mind the extra X's but I'd have a hard time needing more than 12X shooting elk or deer sized animals at the ranges I do.

I have two 2-12 VX6s, and even with my aged eyes, they work quite well. I guess I qualify as living in the west. Man, it just does my heart good to see these old classics being resurrected to new life.

I can't wait to retry some of the 77 grain loads and see if they repeat.

Looks good so far Scotty! It would be tough to pass up a Z3 on that rifle 3-10 they are a nice scope and pretty darn light. If not that I'd go with something with a 6X zoom ratio on a 42-44 obj. As far as versatility it's hard to beat that 3-18 VX-6 or a Z5 Swaro with a #4.

Careful that 6x.

They have a way of grabbing one and asking "So what was it you needed that variable scope for?" Sneaky scopes, those 6x's.

Usually they ask that question while the hunter is in the process of tagging yet another animal...

I'm sure your 6x Leupold was telling you that after you took out that coyote at over 400 yards :)

Scotty,
You should put some open sights and quick release scope rings on that beast!

That is the plan. It has Talley QRW rings right now, just didn't put the levers on yet. I think NEGC does sights as well. I wanna make sure the rifle will shoot to standards before I sink too much in it.

Hey Scotty, if it doesn't come up to standards are you going to get a 30-06 barrel for it or pick up the 270 barrel from 6mm just for insurance?

That's low, Rodger; just low. The 35 Newton just oozes "cool."

Yes it does, Doc!

A 27 Newton? Yeah, I'd try it!

Not even gonna touch that project. 27 Newton...... What will you think of next? That's about as bad as someone wanting to build a 30-375 Ruger

Scotty,
NECG make great open sights. I really like a banded front myself. You using Talleys jogged my memory. Brockmans makes an altered Talley base with a pop up peep spring loaded under the scope. Talley also makes a quick attach peep that mounts on their base after the rings are removed. Plain old open sights work well but you'll have a pretty short sight radius. Moving it back to the rear sight base would give you more accuracy and the choice of aperture size.

Thanks fellas. I'm real impressed by it. It's the first time I've chrono'ed it with anything. Need to get some more 17 but I'll be back at it shortly.

Scott, it should make a dandy elk rifle. Pretty sure with a decent dial on it, it should reach 600 with a little power to spare.

Nathan, this is about as big as I'd want in a rifle this light. It's fairly lively.

Scotty, if you can't find RL17, try IMR 4350. They are the same burn rate.

Nah just a little pay back for the 30-06 comment.

Well, I was getting a little worried. I had wanted try some more seating depths but I couldn't really load much shorter than 3.29.. Maybe could squeak a little more, but I am getting pretty close to the ogive. I decided on 76.5 in order to run through them. Had a nice day at the range yesterday. The little 6X Nikon worked much better at 200 yards with the green squared targets.

Anyhow, here is what I came up with..

All groups were at 200 yards.

3.31 - 2908, 2943, 2930

3.30 - 2939, 2927, 2959

3.29 - 2969, 2950, 2962 ----

I also shoot one round of each length, at its own target. So for three shots, I am shooting one 3.31, 3.30, and 3.29. Then, the next round I start at 3.29 and work backwards. Might seem crazy but it works for me.

But this is another instance of an AB being over .1 off the rifling before it'll really come alive.

I was kinda getting worried, cause if the 225 AB didn't do what I wanted it to, I haven't picked up a back up bullet just yet!

It was a great range day though.

It is difficult not to be excited by how the accuracy pulled tight as you seated the bullet deeper. That 3.290 inch load is just awesome. That has to be a hurting on about anything you would shoot with that load. Excellent stuff, Scotty.

That 3.29" load is looking very nice, just over 1 " at 200 yards is very good. Talk about a long range hammer for big stuff 8) Now maybe a 250 gr PT or 270 gr North Fork would be good to play with in case grizzlies start showing up in North Virginia :)
