Moose Opens Monday

Gerry,

What is terrible, is that at this time of year, I'll gladly drop him simply because he is not in rut and he will be so tasty. Consequently, that has happened more than once to me.

Dr Mike,
What ever gun you take I'm sure it will do the job. I'm praying the Lord gives you Favor and Blessing the opening morning for a quick kill.

Don

Good luck! Moose, Caribou, and sheep are at the top of my hit list. One of these days Ill be able to afford it! Kill a big'un!

NEVER EVER TOO OLD!!

Righto! I'll use my walked for a gun rest.

DT, I count myself blessed to be able to even think about hunting such game.

Just curious what your temps are running right now and if you get a moose down will you have to hustle to get it to a cooler someplace? It's 80 degrees here today in Montana! Too hot for me!

David,

Effectively, if I don't have a moose down by 8:30 or so, it is safe that day. Daytime temps are in the upper teens (mid 60s). Nighttime temps are in the low double digits (mid 40s). I plan to be in the field by 4:30; the temperature should be around 8 to 10 degrees. I can usually have a moose skinned and cleaned within an hour if it doesn't get into thick stuff. I would like it to be cooler, but I'll take what I have, provided I'm able to drop it in a decent place. I'm only about an hour from town, and I've already made arrangements with my butcher to hang it. I have often been able to drag a moose from the woods with a quad and winch it into the bed with a come-along and have it at the butcher before 8. This is especially the case if I can tag it first thing (say by 5). I do need to inspect my knives this afternoon just to ensure they are sharp. I carry two complete sets--one for hide and one for meat. A moose can dull a knife pretty quickly.

Bill,

Good words of encouragement. Yeah, I know about that packing. That is why I try to find a young feller to take with me when I hunt. It'll do Scotty and Brian good to see an elk up close in the bottom of a western canyon. :)

I have seen a couple of them! 5 steps up, 30 second break, 5 steps up and so on! It is worth every step though. Scotty

Well, no moose this morning. I'll go back out this evening to scout. The temperature was 4 C (39 F), which is very good. It was 13 C (55 F) when I got home at 8. I saw quite a few mule deer. A couple of the bucks have some pretty good antlers. Of course, they are still in velvet. I watched two young bull elk feeding through the valley, but they were safe. Elk doesn't open for two weeks. I didn't see any bear, though I was cautioned about a large black bear in the area. Bear is open; and I suppose I'd take him if I saw him. He will have been feeding on berries--raspberries and blueberries are plentiful and very tasty at the moment. Consequently, because of where I was situated, I carried the 7mm WSM this morning.

Mike -
Thanks for the update. I like your choice of caliber :). You can always take a different one for a stroll this evening.

Mike,

Sounds like a great opening day! Knowing you, its just a matter of time.

Nice! Sounds like a great morning Mike! I like your choice of moose rifle as well! I imagine you will catch up with a moose quick enough anyhow. No sense in putting you in too much of a rush. Scotty

It is quite breezy now, and the temperature is holding. Maybe it'll be cool enough this evening if I see something. It was bright and cloudless at 4:30 this morning, but it is clouded over now. There is no rain forecast until Wednesday, so I should be able to get in a hunt this evening, and again tomorrow if I need it. I would like to find that big bruin that is hanging around the area. He sounds like a seven footer. However, I know how those things grow when people see them close up.

Hi Mike, thanks for the update. Maybe a photograph or 2 so we can see terrain
Good luck this evening, photos of BooBoo or Bull Winkle

Blessings,
Dan

Dan,

I did think as I was traipsing through the woods this morning, "Hmmmm. I should have stuck my camera in my vest." Before the week is out, I'm certain I'll manage a picture of two. I still looking. The elk and the mule deer did look very nice. I didn't disturb them; I just watched for a bit. The mulie finally got nervous and disappeared into the bush.

Dr. Mike,
Sounds like a good hunt so far. Go get em Buddy. Better Pack that 35 Cal.-Something if you meet up with that Bear.
