I'm stoked. It is hard to stay focused on other responsibilities. Moose opens Monday. I want to be in the field by 4:30 Monday morning. I was out scouting this afternoon. I've located a couple of two-year-olds that will get my attention first thing Monday. I'm debating between the 7mm WSM with a 160 AB and the .356 with a 220 grain Speer FN. I should be able to get within 60 yards, so the .356 would deliver a solid blow. I need to ensure that I get plenty of rest and then be there early Monday.

Good luck Mike. I'm there with you in spirit buddy! Although I love my 35's I really wanna see that 7 with the 160's do a moose in. Just to hear the performance of it. Heck, the 356 is pretty cool too. Tough call. Get some rest buddy. You'll have a moose to skin before too long! Scotty

Mike,

Best of luck to you. I too will be there (with Scotty) in spirit. If I was there, I would do the skinning for you.
The 7mm WSM with the 160 gr AB should convince a bull to go home to your freezer.

I'd love nothing better than to share a hunt one day with all the fellows from this forum. Unfortunately, that will likely not happen right away. So, I'll do all I can to invite you to share vicariously. Still, I'm plenty stoked (as per the usual at this time of year).

Hi Mike, best of luck to you this coming week. Remember lots of photos. Which ever one of your rifles you use it should be over quick.
Hope to hear from you Monday night

Blessings,
Dan

Here's to a broadside shot and a short drag!!

Shoot Straight!

Good luck Mike, you are so lucky to be able to hunt moose so long on your side of the province. Probably the best way to decide which gun to use is take them both and see which one you grab going out the truck door :) A nice fat 2 pt that goes about 400 lbs in the quarters is some of the best meat you could ever get.

It's what mama ordered; and I always do what mama orders.

Good luck, DrMike, I hope that you are able to catch one of those young bull moose that you have had an eye on. Give us a report when you return.

+1 with Scotty. Would really like to see the 7mm WSM do it's thing with the AccuBond, but I think I'd take them both and see how you feel when you step from the truck! Good luck and shoot straight on that nice young and fat bullwinkle!

Best of luck! That .356 at modest range should be a hoot.

Looking forward to the hunt report, and seeing another moose headed for the freezer!

Have fun Mike...as others have said, lots of pictures and a blow by blow account :) .

At 60 yards, I think the old lever gun should be used. We do need to convince Brian that the 7 WSM will work well for elk/moose sized game in case he needs to "borrow" Scott's :p .

Thanks, fellows. Well, the pressure is on (mostly self-imposed). I truly want to fill the freezer for my daughter (and six grandchildren). I also have a single mom in the congregation that is having a tough time at the moment. I would like to surprise her and fill her little apartment freezer. That's not to say that I wouldn't appreciate some minute steaks and a couple of T-bones for myself. Whichever rifle I use, I'll likely use the other for elk and black bear. Consequently, there are some large elk herds in the same area I'm hunting, so some September I hope to tag my elk--bulls open September 1 and cows open September 15. I just made arrangements to head up north the end of September for a couple of weeks to hunt caribou and sheep. I wonder if I'm getting too old for this? Nah, I can still walk.

Dr. Mike,
Take the 350 Rem Mag. or the 358 win., well anything in .358 would get my vote. You know how I like the 35's. Good luck and be safe out there. Looking forward to a good report with pictures.

never think about the age "JUST DO IT" my wife has a T shirt on it with that saying

Many years ago while hunting I ran into a couple of guys in the botton of a deep canyon in NE Oregon. They stopped looked really hard at me and asked me, what I was going to do if I was to shoot an elk down there. I told them pack it back up the hill. They then just rode away. A few years later my partner and I killed a cow on the other side of that canyon, we went to the bottom and then up the other side a ways to shoot her. Took two full days 1 trip each day to get her out but we did it.
Scotty and Brian will get a close look at the bottom of that canyon in a couple of months.

Don,

I'm pretty certain that since it is a young'un, I won't have to worry about firepower. However, I am partial to the 35s, just as you are.

Bill,

Good words of encouragement. Yeah, I know about that packing. That is why I try to find a young feller to take with me when I hunt. It'll do Scotty and Brian good to see an elk up close in the bottom of a western canyon. :)

Good luck! I'd grab the .35 and go get him. I'd love to see a picture of the hunt area if you get a chance (when you get back) It can be a workout for sure but packing yummy critters out of the hinterlands is one of my favorite logistical problems. Best of luck to ya

You realize that you are going to slip in there quietly and there will be a 60" bull standing there
