Well, I spent a good day on the range with the 35 Newton. It is a handful on the bench and this is the first time I have broken out the chrono to see what kinda FPS I was getting. I had a real good idea with the QL projections, but you can never tell.

I have worked up the first few times out. I started out around 73 grains of RL17 but groups were pretty large. Again, I wanted to work up slowly, just in case, but I knew I should be in the mid to high 2900's.

It is somewhat of a challenge doing bench work with a 6X scope at 200 yards. Not hard, but I should use a bigger bull. Either way, it is coming together decently.

Brass is reformed 375 Ruger, CCI250's and of course, the 225 AB.

75- 2920, 2918, 2980, 2960

76- 2950, 2991, 2982, 2953

77- 2966, 3048, 3049, 3021

I think a few of the readings were anomalies since the sun kinda peeked out right on the chrono. Maybe not though? Either way, I am getting plenty of speed. Gotta work a little with seating depth, but they are already pretty far off the rifling, so I will reshoot a few groups to see if I really need to change much up. It was a great start with the rifle, but it would be nice to get most of the shooting done before the sun is beaming down.

Nice looking groups Scotty for 6x at 200 yards. Excellent shooting my friend.

That is one powerfull combo there huh? That would be poison for just about anything.

How many rounds do you have down the barrel now? Also how is the fowling on the fresh cut barrel. Still debating on a rebore or new barrel.
It looks good for 200yds with a 6X scope.

Thanks fellas, it is my most serious recoiler, but not horrible.

Probably about 50-70 or so down the tube Rodger. Fouling is nill at this point. Matter of fact, I won't be cleaning it for awhile. I can see a touch of copper but not enough to clean at this point. I am pretty sure it'll really start grouping with a little more X's and maybe some more rounds down it, but it is doing well right now.

Yeah, those 225 grainers are smoking out of that cartridge. Nothing like making an old antique sing. That looks good, man.

........and that's out of a 21" barrel! Holy FPS Batman! What a rifle; good handling short barrel and speed to get the energy and trajectory. I wondered if having that 358 bore would help the efficiency.... I think it would make a great Alaskan bear gun.

Well you have all the other 35's covered so you better do a 35-26 Nosler next. 225's at 3150-3200fps.

That will be a real hammer, very nice. A bigger bullseye will make a big difference when you start shooting farther with a 6X scope, I found that out shooting at 300 last year with mine.

Thanks fellas. I'm real impressed by it. It's the first time I've chrono'ed it with anything. Need to get some more 17 but I'll be back at it shortly.

Scott, it should make a dandy elk rifle. Pretty sure with a decent dial on it, it should reach 600 with a little power to spare.

Nathan, this is about as big as I'd want in a rifle this light. It's fairly lively.

My 358STA is quite the handful with 250's at 3000fps in a 9lb package.

Yeah, that is a beast for sure. 9lbs for that cartridge is on the light side.

I will weigh mine when I get a chance. I have no idea what it weighs to be honest.

Scotty, that Newton sure can move those 225s.
If you smack a Moose or Elk with that hamper they will not know what hit them!
Thank you for the range report & photos my friend.

Blessings,
Dan

Looks like it's shaping up nicely! Sounds like a boat full of pure power. Surely there's another scope you can throw on that beauty for load development. Why challenge yourself?

Man, I hope you get that dialed in. Tough choices in your future picking between this and your Alaskan.

Nice shooting Scotty  I think with a little tweaking you will have that thing tightening up on ya in no time as if it needed any help! Those velocities are smoking for sure and a little faster than expected? I think you will have that thing shooting bug holes with a couple more, range trips  Did I mention how pretty that Model 71 was

Scotty, looking good. You’ll get that hammer tightened up and under control. That thing must have a pretty good muzzle blast. I was working with the 300 and the 190 LRAB last week and had a load with RL22, I took the first shot and was like wow. Looked like the flash from the old Winchester Silvertips out of a handgun. It was raining and lower light conditions which prob enhanced the flash but the two guys behind me who were waiting to set up asked what was that.
I’m sure yours has a bit more. Good luck with it.

I actually never noticed any muzzle flash, but I was shooting in the full on daylight without any overhead cover. I think it'll get straightened around pretty well though. Hoping to get the 225AB's tuned up and get another scope mounted up on it. Then, I will get it down to Brian's range and see what it does further out.

Scotty,
What a HAMMER you have there. It's looking good so far. I know you will get her tuned to your liking, but at 200 yards I like the results.

Don

Thanks Don. I think it is going to make a great elk rifle.
