LR hunting with the 270

Scotty,

Good read. The high BC bullets unleash the beast within the 270 Win.

Yeah, no kidding Jim. Might have to get a turret for the 270WSM!

Awesome read but I'm still prejudice to it's #$@$@rd step brother .280 or .280AI if only Nosler made a 175AB. PLEASE! 28" tube 3K!!

There's no doubt that the 270 is a capable long range performer but my 280 is still .007" better. 8)

Desert Fox -"There's no doubt that the 270 is a capable long range performer but my 280 is still .007" better".

.007 bigger but not necessarily better.

Many years ago, at a shoot that was mostly law enforcement types, with a few "civilians" by invitation only - some tower guards from a state prison showed up with bull-barreled .270's - custom jobs.

At 300 yards, while we were slamming the steel silhouettes with our .308's - they cut loose - and handily perforated the steel. It was pretty impressive...

I believe all those rifles have long since been retired, but it was interesting... Most of LE has settled on the .223 and .308 for their rifles - but 15+ years ago things were a little more mixed and some interesting rifles showed up in LE applications. Like .270's, .30-06's and 6mm Remingtons... I even used a 7mm Rem mag for a while.

Nothing wrong with the .270 at all - it's been a terrific hunting cartridge since inception. With the right bullets there's absolutely no reason it can't be a contender at long range.

Al, take the 280 at 270 pressure level and you'll know what I'm talking about.

I just loaded up a set of 270Bee loads for the #1B - 26" barrel. Started with 7828 + 150BTs and 130BTs with 140ABs waiting in the wings. According to Hogdon I could get 3500fps with the 130s  I think the 140AB at 3200-3300 will be my Huckleberry.
Do any of you have recommendations for other powders - I'm not sure how up to date the load info is for the old 270 mag?
Thanks
Scott

Nothing wrong with a 270 mind you. The 280 just has my heart strings.

Those long bullets certainly smell "longrangish". Great to see they are available. Decent read.

Nice read.

I am a big 270 Win fan but no way on earth would I choose the 270 Win for a custom like that.
Just my opinion.

I hunt whitetails and stumble across feral hogs from time to time in SC. A couple years ago I was given the chance to have a fully custom rifle put together. Caliber of choice........ you guessed it...... 270 WIN. If the chance to hunt elk out west materializes in my future, I'll load some 150gr partitions and never look back.

You should order up some of those Matrix 165's Scott. With the long throat of a Weatherby they would be a good choice. They performed well on game for us this last year too. They don't blow up like Bergers and seem to be less fussy about seating depth. My .30-8mm shot under a 1" with them at 550yds and in the .2's and .3's @ 100. They are accurate as hell.
