A suggestion is to shoot the rifle(e)s in a way that will be similar to how they will be when hunting. This infers that I bring more than one rifle to shoot at a time.
Perhaps the most important shot is where the first one hits from a cold barrel. After that I limit big game rifles to three...
ram161,
I don't like the Remington 700 series of rifles for hunting. They lack important safety features and design.
The safety on the 700 is only two position and does not lock the bolt. Nor does that safety hold the firing pin at all but is just a trigger block. Look at the Winchester or...
I go way back to the pre All American products with Lymans. Later I got 10 Leupolds for the hunting rifles and they are ok.
I noticed that when looking towards the sun a Leupold crosshair fades out and turns pink.
The Zeiss Conquests came out and they have much better optics for my eye than a...
BearClan,
For accurate loads in sporting rifles as opposed to say bench rest guns I prefer to FL size as I have so many guns so I want each one to be ready to function.
Sometimes a neck sized round may not work as smooth due to an out of round chamber, whatever.
For the extreme case such as...
tjRoberts,
I have been a Savage99 fan since I got my first one in 1966. Both of the ones I have are chambered for the .358 Win.
I was talking to a gun dealer here who has a rifle like yours for sale. He said that five years ago there were a half dozen of them in the rack and now the demand...
I did not vote. I would have voted for Weaver. The top mount Weaver can be quickly removed with a coin.

tjRoberts,
I have used the 358 Winchester as my primary woods rifle since I got a 99F in 1966. I got a second one about ten years ago.
I used to load the 200 gr Silvertip with excellent results on deer when it was sold as a component. About 20 years or so I switched to the 180 Speer with...
I go back to when the 222 R. first came out and the Hornet never impressed me. Its a poor case design and lacks power and range should you need it.
Consider reduced loads for a normal sized .224". IMR's 4759 was made for reduced loads and it makes accurate low noise ammo.
IMR #4759 is high...
tjRoberts,
I too like 308 rifles for the reasons you gave and that they are available in lighter rifles like the Kimber Montanas that you and I use.
I have had a battery of pre 64 M70's going back to my first one in 1957 and when the 308 came out it was in the same action as the 30-06. No...
sithlord,
You should be able to FL size once fired brass to fit your chamber to the shoulder if the cartridge has an adequate one.
Just FL size a fired case part way and try it in your rifles chamber. Size it some more until it fits. That the bolt closes ok but you can just feel it.
JD338,
That .358 W. is a Mannlicher Schoenauer full stock carbine with a 20.5" barrel. As you know they have a rotary magazine.
I got it at the Autumn Gun Works in Goshen, CT. (860) 491-4867
He had two of those fabulous full stocked carbines at the time. The other was a 30-06 and its sold...
bullet,
Good to hear that your getting a .358 Win. I got my first one in 1966 and its my favorite woods round.
I like the Rugers also. A great gun.
I have four .358's and load the Speer 180 for deer with RL 10. I used to use IMR 4198 and that works well also.
Here is my latest .358.
Scott,
I started with Lyman scopes back in the 50's and acquired some others as well including Hensoldt, Unertl and others.
Then when Lyman stopped making scopes I got 10 new Leupolds. They were good scopes but their crosshairs fade and turn pink when you aim towards some light!
Then I got...
