I will hopefully have my 358 Winchester Ruger Hawkeye in about a week and once I get it and set it up I will post pictures of the rifle and the load work. I want to focus on two bullet weights and two specific bullets but open to other suggestions on bullets to use. First I will try 225gr Sierra Game King and Partition and later the 250gr Partition. The 225gr for all around use especially on deer, hogs, black bear, elk and moose and the 250 Partition on Brown if I get the chance.

I have some loads from some of you guys and friends who are getting 2500 - 2550fps with the 225gr and good accuracy. Should be fun working with the 358Win. I always do have fun at the reloading bench and the bench at the range, then fun in the woods and field seeing how my work will pay off.

Any of you who have some favorite loads that have not yet posted any of your favorite 358Win loads using 225gr or 250gr bullets that you have found to be accurate showing good velocities and would share them with me I would appreciate it. This would really help me hold down the time and the cost of load development.

I have in the past on this forum only posted my final work and did not post the trip on the way to the final good load. So no one saw my bumpy road and pit falls in obtaining my good hunting loads that I have posted in the past and might have thought, "this guy sure is lucky". Well, I plan on posting "The Good", The Bad", and "The Ugly" with this cartridge finishing with "The Good" hopefully. Thank you, pictures coming soon.

Congrats

Let me know if you need loads. Been loading for the 35's for years.

bullet,

Good to hear that your getting a .358 Win. I got my first one in 1966 and its my favorite woods round.

I like the Rugers also. A great gun.

I have four .358's and load the Speer 180 for deer with RL 10. I used to use IMR 4198 and that works well also.

Here is my latest .358.

does anyone have an encore in 358 winchester. I have been thinking about buying a 35 whelen barrel but rather have a 358 if they even make one. I know I love my 356 winchester.

No problem, you know one will be on the way for sure. I like taking pictures of my beauties when I dress them up.

Ruger bolt actions to me are the Jeep Wrangler of rifles. They last forever and when you scratch them up or ding them is seems to add character to the rifle. I am not go to put an expensive scope on but thought I would put the Jeep Wrangler of scopes on it because it is roughed and I really like them and get a lot for the money spent.

JD338,

That .358 W. is a Mannlicher Schoenauer full stock carbine with a 20.5" barrel. As you know they have a rotary magazine.

I got it at the Autumn Gun Works in Goshen, CT. (860) 491-4867

He had two of those fabulous full stocked carbines at the time. The other was a 30-06 and its sold also. He has lots of fine guns.

That is an awesome 358. I would be scared to make too many "memory marks" on that rifle. I have enough trouble trying to keep my Browning looking healthy. Thanks for the loads also. What have you taken with the 358? Scotty

POP, you are like my hunting dog, he always shows up for breakfast!!! Thanks POP, this really will help and keep me out of trouble.

That is great data to get me started. I have H322 in the past and it seems to be a great powder for metering purposes, plus I still have some left. I may have to give it a try. Scotty

..................Bullet...........Wouldn`t a 3x9 be a little much for the 358..... A 2-7x35 Fullfield 11 a little better?

Yes, one would think a 1.5-4 or 2-7 scope would be all that is needed and is the best. I am not of that persuasion at all because the 358Win is not just a woods or brush gun. That is what the the supposed experts said in 1955 and 1960 in articles and other articles through the years, saying and describing the 358Win in these terms. They were wrong, just plain wrong. I will be one that stretches the legs of this 358 and believe that it will not only be a close up thumper but a legitimate 300yd rifle with the 225gr bullet.

Most hunting that is practical is 300yds and most really don't like to take over 200yd shots and some who try can't. I want the Ballistic plex also.

2500fps (and this is attainable without over max pressures)
+3" high at 100yds

Zero is 215yds

-9" at 300yds

Short bolt, efficient cartridge, great caliber and 22" barreled rifle. It will be more than a bush gun and will be perfect for the Mississippi woods and it is in many other places as well.

With a 225gr bullet, I will have accuracy, velocity and good down range capabilities for the cartridge. Of course this is my goal and I will try and reach it. You know how I am on accuracy, infact I demand it of the rifle and me. Of course this Ruger is not a custom and I will settle for a hunting load that is an inch even an 1 1/4" and under on a consistent bases. It is something to shoot for and have fun with and prove my thesis. Everybody needs a goal to shoot for and I believe mine is somewhere in the ball park.

PS - I have killed up close and I mean up close on more than one occasion with 3 power and more, one time on 6 power.

If you train yourself to shoot with both eyes open a 2x or 3x is not really a handicap at all. I am going to go with a Leupold 2x7 with the LR reticles. I would think it would help with a longer shot if needed. I agree with you Bullet, 3" high at a 100 and then about 9-10" low at three hundred is pretty easy to dope for and would make an elk a chip shot under decent circumstances. I can't wait to see how you make out with the 225gr load. It should be a fun load development. Scotty

A 2x7 is more than adequate even out to 400 yards. And I think the 2x7 Fullfield is available in the ballistic plex if I`m not mistaken?.........You`ll have a wider FOV on the low end for short ranged hunting and 7x on the high end, which is more than enough for those 300-350 yard shots and for the capabilities of the 358 Win cartridge..........But, if you prefer the 3x9, go for it!

A 2-7 is not adequate for 400yds. I have shot all my life and a 7 is not adequate on deer at 250-300yds because I need to be able to see spread width and count points on a white tail. In some places I could be ticketed and on some leases I could pay a 100 dollars or more for a mistake and some places would not invite me back not to mention possibly loosing my license.

I have 20/20 in one eye and 20/10 in the other eye and at 300 yds seeing the spread width and counting points is all but impossible under some legal light and conditions to even see with a 9 power. Anyone who hunts a lot and has these requirements on buck knows what I am talking about. I don't always have time to throw up my binos and look through them when a buck is walking across a gas line or narrow area and if he is chasing does and I stop him for a moment with a grunt or some other means I need to have my rifle ready to fire. The 3-9x40mm is the minimum as far as I am concerned especially hunting white tail at any distance over 250 and beyond. Of course if I did not have to worry about the spread width or points on one side then I would get a lower power, or if I was only shooting game up close I would.
