25-06 future

After reading some of the latest posts mentioning Norma brass, I went to Midway's site. I found what to me is an oddity.

They list the brass, all right, in new and blemished condition, 50 rounds per package. The strange part is, they are both the same price, $68.99! SMH.

Man that's quite a list!

Have to say I like the 25 Creedmoor and 25-06 the most from those chamberings.

Okay, so I want a 25-06, but a 6.5-06? Man, that just seems classy:cool:
I had a 6.5-06 that had been built on a Sako action, McGowen barrel 19ins and a full stock. Classic looking but was heavy due to the weight of the stock. The short barrel kind of hampered the potential of the caliber. Shot great, killed one deer with it then traded for something else. Always thought about getting another 6.5-06 with a 24-inch barrel but just never did. Personally think it is a good caliber. Dan.

Fellow I used to shoot with some years ago had only a few rifles. He used his 6.5-06 for both hunting and matches. Was quite good with it. He shot long-range prone matches with it. He really liked that thing. I think he's still got it.

Also had a varmint weight 223 Rem 700 with the HS Precision stock. That barrel wouldn't die! He had over 7,000 rounds through it and was still doing great with it at various tactical/practical matches we were doing back then. He and a buddy both shot it at one match in Idaho, his buddy won the "cold bore" prize. Center punched the tiny bullseye at 100 yards from the bipod. I started getting more interested in the little 223 then... :)

If you do a 6.5-06, then you really ought to look into the 256 Newton. Nothing new in the woods. CL

Seems clear Norma (Plus other) 25-06 brass is in short supply in the USA - here in UK Norma is available & I use it exclusively. It's good brass & treated right with your case prep, it lasts ages, firing after firing.
A big deal is not to oversize the brass. resize to 'Fired case headspace' dimension just bumping the case shoulder back .002".
I F/L resize exclusively & never neck size. I use a fairly hot load with Viht, N560 but it never seems to affect the primer pockets.
It's also good to know if push comes to shove, as you said Bob, .270 or 30-06 brass can be resized & necked down to .25-06 - though I confess, I've never had to do it.
The main thing is not to simply F/L resize to SAAMI/CIP dimensions & anneal the brass after around 3 - 4 firings.
Good luck & have fun .. .. 25-06 is a really cool cartridge

Agreed, it sure is!

It could definitely be worse. Try being in the 257 Roberts fan club! Finding brass is rough and 110 Accubonds were MIA for the better part of two years. Furthermore, the cost of a box of Nosler ammo will leave you scratching your head in disbelief.
Our family loves the cartridge and it’s been very good to us, but component availability and cost make me think about jumping ship to (dare I say) the 6.5 Creedmoor that seems to have a ton more support.

Joe
Had a friend call before rifle season opened in a panic because he couldn’t find 257 Bob, and was asking if I could hand load for him…never did find brass, but eventually scheels had an ammo sale and I caught them with 257 Bob with SST’s… so bought 6 boxes. Told him to not pitch the brass next time…
